The tour starts at the parking lot on Scherrichmühlweg. From there, you follow the path to the first stops on this audio-guided tour, discovering diverse natural landscapes along the way.

Right at the beginning, the Schießstattweiher pond awaits you, nestled in a valuable wetland and surrounded by fields and riparian woodland. The route then leads you to the historic old town of Wangen. Here, you pass the Martinstor (St. Martin's Gate), one of the imposing city gates made of Argen pebbles and bricks. It is one of three old gates that bring Wangen's eventful history to life. A little further on, you reach the Argen River with its bridge on the old city wall, offering views of the water and the architectural details of the surrounding area.

Finally, you discover the Kopfwascherbrunnen (Headwasher Fountain) near the historic bathhouse in the lower town. Here, you will learn vividly what personal hygiene looked like in the Middle Ages.

The five-story Martinstor, also known as the Lindau Gate, built of argentinian pebbles and bricks, is one of the three remaining city gates of Wangen im Allgäu, along with the Frauentor and the Pfaffentor at the town hall. The other two were demolished in the 19th century.

Argen in Wangen

Highlight • River

The Argen River is as much a part of Wangen as Maultäschle is to Baden-Württemberg. However, its steep slopes have made it almost impossible to reach the banks. This will change as part of the 2024 State Garden Show: riparian zones will be flattened so that people can safely sit by the water or take a refreshing swim.

At the same time, the river will be revitalized and ecological diversity promoted by giving it more space, more vitality, and a more natural feel. Its bed will be widened, creating different flow patterns. This will encourage more and new fish and plants to settle there.

Old river branches, however, will remain, becoming "bypasses" into which fish can retreat, for example, during floods. This creates rest areas for aquatic animals. And to protect the climate, trees will be planted in many places along the banks, providing shade for the river and oxygen for all of us.

In Wangen's lower town is the historic bathhouse. Here, you can see how people practiced personal hygiene in the late Middle Ages. In front of the bathhouse windows stands the headwashing fountain. A man has his head washed by a bathmaid.
