Two ascents to scenic heights allow you to enjoy magnificent panoramic views on this tour, which includes some altitude gain, through vineyards, orchards, and natural valley locations. The landscape is particularly beautiful during the fruit blossom in spring and during harvest time in autumn. Tip for enjoyable cycling: The 45-kilometer "Obstroute" (Fruit Route) can also be shortened to 30 kilometers by skipping the second ascent to the plateau behind Schwabenheim and a section of the Rhine Cycle Path. However, the TOP panoramic section is included in both routes.

From the imperial palace city of Ingelheim, you ride at the foot of the Westerberg towards Gau-Algesheim, home of the Rheinhessisches Fahrradmuseum. With pleasant gradients, you then cycle along the vineyards up to the heights of the plateau near Ober-Hilbersheim and Engelstadt. Enchanting views of the hilly landscape of Rheinhessen, the Rhine Valley, and as far as the Taunus on the other side of the Rhine make all the effort of the climb worthwhile. We particularly recommend the Wingertsschaukel near Engelstadt.

After descending to the idyllic Selz river, a break at the Elftausend-Mägde-Turm is recommended before heading uphill for the second time, this time up the Mainzer Berg. Once at the top, you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the Selz Valley before a scenic descent takes you down into the Rhine plain. In Heidenfahrt, you will reach the Rhine, which you follow back to Ingelheim – with the wide river always in sight.

A great spot in the vineyards – keep your eyes open, otherwise you'll drive past it and at first you'll only see the bench and the little house.

Ruins of the Eleven-Thousand Maidens Tower

Highlight • Historical Site

The Elftausend-Mägde-Turm (Tower of the Eleven Thousand Maidens) is located on the western outskirts of Stadecken-Elsheim, at the crossing of the old Mainz-Kreuznach road over the Selzbach.

It was built in the 14th century and served as a customs station in the Middle Ages on the road from Mainz to Kreuznach. Every traveler had to cross the Selz there. The tower is the remnant of a fortified gatehouse with two round corner towers.

Saint Ursula is said to have used the road with her 11,000 virgins on her way to Cologne – hence the name Elftausend-Mägde-Turm.

Always beautiful again: cozy benches with a view of the Rhine. In summer, there is gastronomy next door and usually a stand with fresh fruit. And all year round, the restaurant behind the dike.

The weather wasn't ideal for this tour. The haze, however, gave the area a somewhat mystical feel. We didn't see any sirens (such as the Lorelei) on the Rhine, though, and we'll visit the Mäuseturm (Mouse Tower) tomorrow.
It was still a wonderful tour through the wine-growing hills on the left bank of the Rhine. Recommended for a follow-up, especially …

Sun 🌞, blue sky, beautiful villages, orchards, fragrant rapeseed fields, panoramic views, Rhine, horses, young geese, fallow deer, alpacas, rest areas, swings, vineyards, Selztal... Everything was great today, except for the steep climb in Wackernheim😭which wore me out.

Today I went with the eBike on the fruit route, which is practically on my doorstep. I've driven parts of it many times, but I never made it all the way because I kept getting lost. In Ingelheim in particular, …

The fruit route is on my doorstep and I don't have to plan anything, so it's actually ideal when I don't have much time, like today. So I do it every now and then - but today I realized again that I don't really like it that much. It goes through built-up areas quite a lot: first through Schwabenheim, then …

The fruit route is a beautiful tour on almost entirely paved roads. Only the section along the Rhine is naturally bound surface, which is only recommended in dry phases. Otherwise it is better to use the path signposted as a fruit route.
The route is almost completely signposted with the fruit symbol. Two steep climbs have to be mastered, not …

In mid-April you can still see many flowering trees, a week earlier it would certainly have been even more intense.

My time window was a bit limited today and so I drove the fruit route again. Counterclockwise this time. From Heidenfahrt to Ingelheim I didn't take the official route, but walked straight along the Rhine. Unfortunately, the ice cream parlor in Gau-Algesheim wasn't open yet, they don't open until 12 noon. I didn't have to stop that often because I …
