Hiking

Hiking in the footsteps of Wallenstein: The famous general from the Thirty Years' War spent a semester at the university in Altdorf as a student. That's why a circular route is dedicated to him here, which takes you to the places that were important to the young Wallenstein. The hike starts at the town hall, where the tourist information is also located. You can travel to Altdorf in a relaxed manner by train.

Right at the beginning of the path you pass the former university, the so-called Altdorfina. A little further on there is a museum about the university if you want to find out more about the topic. But first on the agenda is the hike. You make your way out of the town through the historic city wall. The next stop is the lion's den in the forest, where you can explore a rock cellar with the help of a flashlight.

Then behind the pretty, historic Prethalmühle you reach the Schwarzach, which you follow west through the beautiful valley until you turn right to Grünsberg. The impressive castle in Grünsberg can even be visited on request.

On the other side of the town you enter the forest again. To your right is the Devil's Gorge. At the end of it you can go down some stairs to admire a waterfall. From there you hike back to Altdorf, where there is still a lot to discover. If you want to stop off right at the destination, you can stop at the Rotes Ross restaurant, which serves Franconian specialties.

Former university building

Highlight • Historical Site

These university buildings, whose construction began in 1571, are very remarkable. Here too there is a good information board that explains the most important facts. The buildings are not open to the public. Events sometimes take place in the courtyard. The stones for the construction came from a quarry that is now known as the Lion's Den. This is also a place worth seeing in the south of the town.

Auer's Beer Cellar

Highlight • Historical Site

The Auer'sche Keller is a former beer cellar of a former local brewery (Altdorfer Brauhaus). It was formerly used as the taproom of the nearby lion pit. The branched cellar was driven into the castle sandstone around 1846. It is privately owned. The Auer'sche Bierkeller is located on the way near the Löwengrube and has lost none of its old charm. Today it is sometimes used for art exhibitions. Only the front of the old half-timbered house can be seen from the building. The rest of the building protrudes into the hillside and is protected from the weather and strangers.

Prethalm Mill (Historic Mill)

Highlight • Historical Site

The mill was first mentioned in documents in 1360 and was completely destroyed in the Thirty Years' War in 1635. The mill was rebuilt in 1643 and has since served as a flour and sawmill. When industrialization began, the mill was converted to produce electricity to maintain an energy-intensive copper foil factory. Today the mill feeds its green electricity directly into the grid.

Grünsberg Castle

Highlight • Castle

The castle or earlier castle complex has been beautifully restored. There are often classical and other unusual and demanding concerts in the library, in the castle chapel or even open air. Plus organic food and drinks, great tours through the palace and to the water rams. There is always something to do here.

The Teufelskirche is a gorge in the Rhät Sandstone and an adventure playground in a mystical world. The path through the gorge leads in some places over wooden bridges or stone blocks to make any progress. Sometimes you sink to the ankles in the mud, waterproof footwear is advisable and good sure-footedness is necessary. At the end of the gorge, a small waterfall flows down the layers of sandstone. At the waterfall, stairs lead into the gorge and an information board has been installed. At the foot of the rock formations at the waterfall, some tunnels up to 70 meters long testify to attempts to mine lignite and silver.

Trail Reviews

Roland 🥾 & Mickey 🐶🐾
April 5, 2025, Altdorfer Wallenstein Rundweg

Today's hike took us to Altdorf in the Nuremberg region. I chose the Wallenstein Circular Trail. The trail is very well signposted in both directions. Unfortunately, the section through the Devil's Gorge near Grünsberg is closed indefinitely.

A very beautiful circular trail out of the town of Altdorf, across beautiful meadows, through the forest with spooky caves, along the Schwarzach River. Back at the starting point, you can enjoy an ice cream in the beautiful old town. Unfortunately, the Devil's Gorge is still closed!

A lovely circular hike starting from the center of Altdorf. A beautifully renovated and restored town center offers many places to stop for refreshments or food. Wide pedestrian areas with plenty of comfortable seating are available. The nearby highway is the only obstacle to the tranquil Schwarzach Valley, past fruit trees, meadows, buildings along the Schwarzach River, and the forest. Of course, the name "Wallenstein" is tempting! But he only attended university there briefly. Had he not beaten his servant half to death, might his life, and thus history, have turned out differently? I can't judge. It was spontaneous, sunny and autumnal, not too strenuous, and ultimately, it was quite delicious 😀 I apologize for the city tourism, not because of Wallenstein, but because of the Franconian flair, the rock cellar, and the beautiful nature. I'll be back... I was so reliant on the good signage that I missed the only corner – where the sign was overgrown and could only have been seen by looking back over my shoulder. Oh well 😔👍

This varied tour starts in the beautiful medieval town of Altdorf. The trail is named after Albrecht von Wallenstein, a famous general from the Thirty Years' War who was probably expelled from the "Altdorfina", a well-preserved university from the late Renaissance, for improper conduct. In addition to the historical features, the tour impresses with a diverse and varied landscape. After leaving the Altdorf market square with the historic town hall, past the Altdorfina and the nursing office castle and crossing under the A3, you have a beautiful view over the Schwarzachtal to the Dillberg. Past the Löwengrube, a gallery-like rock cellar hewn into the rock, you descend to the Prethalmühle in the Schwarzach valley. Following the course of the river past Prackenfels, the path leads out of the valley again at Grünsberg with the castle of the same name. A beautiful path leads from Grünsberg above an impressive sandstone gorge. Unable to resist this, I deviated from the well-signposted route and descended into the so-called "Teufelskirche", and followed it back towards Grünsberg, before exiting the gorge on the other side and returning to the actual path. For me, this part was the absolute highlight and ideal endurance test for the new hiking boots, which my "Vivos" passed with flying colours!😄 Another stretch through forest and meadows we went back to Altdorf and thus to the starting point of the hike.

Today we went to Altdorf. Great round with a few sights. Further information can be found here: https://urlaub.nuernberger-land.de/detail/id=6137c24d4728c707965fb0b3

First of all, thank you DAV for the good marking and the condition of the paths🥾👍👍. Through the historic old town we went straight out in the footsteps of Wallenstein the generals to the lion's den and to the beer cellars which are still accessible. Continue on natural paths along the Schwarzach past an old power station. Then through a gorge along a creek that had to be crossed. We went steeply up and then through a tree trail to hike on a root path. Then there was another highlight in the Räthsandsteinschlucht with two waterfalls and a Grand Canyon that is secured with alpine rope insurance. In the old town there was a castle with the Wallenstein figure.

In reality, it took us much longer, about 2.5 hours

Because we were so in the festival spirit at Maus Lorenz's, we didn't get a chance to show off our tour yesterday. Of course, we also went hiking 😅 We hiked the Wallenstein Loop near Altdorf, near Nuremberg. Part of the way along the Schwarzach River. The highlights were the Felsenkeller (rock cellars) and Löwengrube (lion pit). The Teufelsschlucht (Devil's Gorge) is unfortunately currently closed due to the risk of landslides and falling trees. If you want to start at the town hall, you shouldn't park your car there. Parking time in the center of Altdorf is limited to 2 hours. The tour can hardly be completed in 2 hours. It's better to choose the starting point for the circular trail outside the city walls! https://urlaub.nuernberger-land.de/detail/id=6137c24d4728c707965fb0b3
