Hiking
On the Heimischgarte panoramic trail, you can expect spectacular views of the Mischabel range, tranquil alpine meadows, a visit to Europe's highest alpine pasture, and a gentle descent through fragrant larch forests. The tour isn't overly challenging, but surefootedness is still required.
It starts at the Kreuzboden mountain station, which you can easily reach by cable car from Saas-Grund. A petting zoo, water playground, and a small lake make the start a delightful experience. After just a few steps, you'll find yourself in the midst of an Alpine picture book. From the vantage point, you'll enjoy fantastic views over the Saas Valley to the four-thousand-meter peaks of the Mischabel range. Below the Jegihorn, the trail takes you along a section of the Gsponer Höhenweg (Gspon High Trail). Narrow paths and scree fields ensure true high-altitude moments.
After a short stream crossing, you reach the Hoferalp in Saas-Balen – at 2,260 meters, Europe's highest alpine pasture. Here, the milk is made into cheese on site – an authentic piece of Alpine culture. The trail then leads you through the Brend, Tewaldji, and Bodme Alps, past flowering meadows and through shady forests, until you finally arrive in Saas-Grund.
After the descent, you can stop off at one of the cozy restaurants and relax with Valais specialties to round off your tour.

A mega hike above Saas-Grund. The cable car takes you to Kreuzboden, and from there onto a high-altitude trail with fantastic views. It winds its way above the valley to Hoferälpji. From there, the trail descends gently, diagonally (along the Alpine Pass Trail): through idyllic, sparse forest, across alpine pastures, and through charming villages. Simply fantastic! 🤩
The high alpine hiking trail from Kreuzboden to Hoferalpji has it all. Fortunately, the trail markings are clearly visible. In places you don't see a way. At the Hoferalpji it started to rain. But we were well prepared with rain jackets and umbrellas. We stayed dry from above, but not from below. On the way down to Saas Grund, the hiking trail led through tall, wet grass. Now we're looking forward to dinner.
