Info: The route is currently still closed (as of June 10, 2025).

Your tour begins impressively at the mighty Mattmark Dam, which collects the shimmering turquoise meltwater from the surrounding glaciers. Nestled in a landscape of ice giants, the reservoir at over 2,000 meters above sea level provides a spectacular entry point. The route is somewhat more technically challenging and offers an unforgettable adventure on rocky, steep terrain.

Your path winds along the western shore, initially through short tunnel passages, repeatedly revealing stunning views of the intensely luminous blue of Lake Mattmark. A particularly beautiful vantage point awaits you near Dischtelalp – here you can see how the lake rests harmoniously nestled between mountain ranges and is fed by crystal-clear mountain streams.

From now on, the trail becomes more alpine, rugged, and challenging: Step by step, you ascend to the Monte Moro Pass, constantly surrounded by imposing rock faces and the tranquil mountain world. From afar, you'll spot the "Madonna of the Snow," whose golden silhouette greets you warmly on the Italian side. Soon, you'll reach the top of the pass and pass Lago Smeraldo, whose emerald-green waters create a magnificent color contrast with the rugged terrain.

Shortly afterward, the Rifugio Oberto Maroli, at 2,796 meters, invites you to a well-deserved rest. The mountain hut offers hearty Italian dishes and breathtaking views of the mighty east face of Monte Rosa. You can relax here and, if you like, even spend the night before heading back to the Saas Valley or exploring Italian soil.

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

From here, you have a magnificent view of Monte Rosa, Italy, and the Saas Valley. In the summer months, you should be up there by noon at the latest, as clouds often roll in from Italy. In autumn, ice skates are highly recommended, as you'll have to cross icy passages.

Rifugio Oberto Maroli

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The Oberto Maroli refuge is located at an altitude of 2,796 metres, under the Monte Moro pass and a short distance from the arrival of the cable car which leaves from Macugnaga. From this position, you can enjoy an incredible view of the east face of Monte Rosa. Regardless of which side you approach the climb from, the route is technically simple, but quite steep. You may not be able to run on the way up, but you definitely can on the way down.
