The full 35.6 km loop is designed for mountain biking and generally takes around 3 hours to complete. However, this can vary significantly based on your skill level, fitness, and how often you stop to enjoy the scenery or take breaks.
The trail offers a diverse and demanding experience, featuring long stretches of flowy singletrack, technical sections, and challenging ascents and descents over eskers. You'll encounter undulating paths, some with roots, especially near Lake Kokalmusjärvi, and stony sections, particularly on the western side of Lake Lounaja. The final part around Jatkonvaara Hill and Huosiharju Esker can be particularly challenging. Approximately 83% of the trail consists of paths, with smaller portions of dirt road and asphalt.
The Sininen saavutus Trail is considered demanding and requires good mountain biking skills. While the overall technical level is classified as intermediate, its length and varied terrain make it less suitable for absolute beginners. There are options to shorten the route in several places, but good mountain biking skills are still recommended for the full circuit.
You'll be treated to stunning esker landscapes, clear lakes, ancient forests, and rugged cliffs. The trail offers picturesque views of interconnected lakes with crystal-clear waters and sandy beaches. Notable spots include the Kokalmus lean-to and Lihapyörre Pond. You can also visit the mysterious prehistoric rock paintings at Värikallio cliffs, though cycling directly to Värikallio is not allowed in summer, requiring a short walk.
The trail is generally open from June to October, when the ground is unfrozen. This period offers the best conditions for mountain biking. Wet weather can significantly increase the difficulty due to slippery roots, making already technical sections even more demanding.
As the trail is located within Hossa National Park, there are designated parking areas available at various entry points to the park. It's advisable to check the Hossa National Park website or local information points for the most convenient parking near the trail's starting point.
Generally, there are no entrance fees to Hossa National Park itself, nor specific permits required for mountain biking on marked trails like the Sininen saavutus. However, it's always recommended to check the official Hossa National Park website for the most current regulations regarding activities, camping, or any potential changes to access policies.
Dogs are generally welcome in Hossa National Park, but they must always be kept on a leash to protect wildlife and ensure the safety and comfort of other visitors. Please remember to clean up after your dog.
Yes, while the route primarily follows the Sininen saavutus Trail, it also passes through smaller sections of other official trails such as Värikallion kaarros, Laukkujärven Lenkki, Muikkupurun mutka, and Lihapyörteen esteetön polku.
The trail is generally ridden counter-clockwise, which is the recommended direction. While demanding, there are options to shorten the route in several places if you find the full circuit too challenging. Many campfire sites along beautiful sandy lakeshores offer great opportunities for breaks and even a swim in clear waters during warmer months.
The Sininen saavutus Trail holds the prestigious IMBA EPICS title, making it the only trail in Finland to receive this international recognition as one of the world's best mountain biking trails. This designation signifies a magnificent natural trail that is technically and physically challenging, situated in a scenic area, and promises an immersive backcountry experience.
