This is a difficult hike, demanding good fitness, sure-footedness, sturdy shoes, and prior alpine experience. It's classified on the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) Hiking Scale as approximately SAC 4-6, indicating a significant level of challenge. Expect technical, difficult, or potentially hazardous terrain in certain sections.
The trail traverses predominantly rocky terrain, featuring granite mounds, pillars, and boulder fields. You'll encounter sections of scree and navigate through glacial valleys. The paths are mostly unpaved, natural, or designated mountain hiking paths.
The route offers magnificent views across Serra da Estrela's dramatic and wild natural scenery. Key highlights include the various lagoons, with Lagoa Comprida being the largest water reservoir. The most distinctive feature is Covão dos Conchos, an artificial dam with a unique "giant hole" spillway that creates an illusion of a portal. You'll also see glacial scars along the banks of the lagoons and pass through the Covão dos Conchos Trail.
Given the challenging nature and high-altitude environment of Serra da Estrela, the best time to hike this route is typically during the late spring, summer, and early autumn months (June to September). During winter, snow and ice can make the trail impassable and significantly more dangerous, requiring specialized equipment and expertise.
Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike this trail or to enter the Serra da Estrela Natural Park itself. However, it's always wise to check local regulations before your visit, especially concerning camping or specific activities. Always adhere to Leave No Trace principles to protect the park's natural beauty.
Specific parking details for this exact trailhead are not provided, but access to trails in Serra da Estrela often involves parking near major points like Lagoa Comprida or other designated areas within the park. It's recommended to research specific parking locations closer to your travel date, as conditions can change.
While many trails in Serra da Estrela allow dogs, given the difficult and potentially hazardous terrain of this specific route, it might not be suitable for all dogs. If you do bring your dog, ensure they are fit, accustomed to rocky and uneven paths, and always keep them on a leash to protect wildlife and for their safety. Be prepared to carry out all waste.
Yes, sections of this route overlap with official trails. Approximately 27% of the Tour of the 5 Lagoons route covers parts of the [CIMA PR07] Torre * San Romao trail and the [CIMA PR07] Torre * Seia trail.
Given its difficult rating, you should bring sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support, appropriate layers of clothing for varying weather conditions (even in summer), plenty of water, high-energy snacks, a map and compass (or GPS device), sun protection, and a first-aid kit. Trekking poles are highly recommended for stability on rocky and uneven terrain.
The Serra da Estrela region has some amenities, particularly around more developed areas like Lagoa Comprida, which may offer cafes or basic services. However, this is a wild mountain environment, so do not expect extensive facilities directly at the trailhead. Plan to be self-sufficient for the duration of your hike.
While the route features several beautiful lagoons, including Long Lake (Lagoa Comprida), specific regulations regarding swimming in these natural reservoirs within Serra da Estrela Natural Park may apply. It's best to check local guidelines or signage at the lagoons themselves to confirm if swimming is permitted and safe.
We started the circular trail to the right of the kiosk at the parking lot and first climbed to the dam. If you go this way, you'll reach the "Gate to the Underworld" (Covão dos Conchos) on a clearly visible path. From there, the circular trail is barely visible; the "Stone Men" were often the only landmarks! Those who want to do the trail in the opposite direction need experience with nature trails. Even finding the entrance is a challenge. ...
A very beautiful, not too strenuous hike. The first part of the route is on a very easy path. After that, it's a bit rocky and partially through bushes on a narrow path. Therefore, I highly recommend wearing long trousers. The final section is a covered levada, quickly returning to the starting point. Beautiful views along the route.
