The Drachenschlucht (Dragon Gorge) is a nearly ten-meter-deep gorge carved into the landscape by a stream. A fascinating hiking trail leads through it, which you will follow on this tour. The route offers unique natural experiences in this natural monument below Wartburg Castle, formed over millions of years. Opposite it runs the Landgrafenschlucht (Landgrave Gorge), which owes its name to a dispute between two noblemen with the delightful names "Friedrich the Bitten" and "Albrecht the Degenerate." This route connects both gorges in a circular walk.
The parking lot in Mariental is very popular on weekends. Depending on when you start your tour, you might also consider traveling by public transport to avoid unnecessary stress. Line 3 takes you from Eisenach to the Mariental stop.

WOW❗ Just great❗ Did this wonderful tour in the best weather 🤗 😍😍😍
I was completely alone in the famous Drachenschlucht (Dragon Gorge), although the Landgrafenschlucht (Landgrave Gorge) is also indescribably beautiful. When I set out at 6 p.m., the sun was shining. Perfect hiking weather, and I only met one other hiker and a young family on the entire tour. Amazing. So I was able to enjoy this natural spectacle all to myself.
On the way in the Thuringian Forest, circular gorge tour just behind or before the town sign of Eisenach, it always follows the E A 1 into many a surprise. Once you have crossed the main road, the first adventure begins. The Dragon Gorge. 2 km slightly uphill, rocks line the narrow path to the right and left. Always along the current roaring stream up to the Rennsteig. From there on the other side of the street, and over the big Drachenstein with great views down to the Wartburg again. Here the forest looks like a primeval forest and is guided back through the Landgrave Gorge to the starting point. Fantastic and in the middle of Germany
With my friend Andrea, who spontaneously joined us, we went to Eisenach. The goal was to close the gaps in our education and get a hike off our list! We achieved both, had a nice meal at the Kartoffelhaus, and enjoyed perfect hiking weather! A tip: definitely don't go via the Landgrafenschlucht to the Drachenschlucht as some hikers recommend, but follow the route here! I'll definitely be back in the area!
Since it is well known that the ice ages in our latitudes are usually quite short-lived, I took the opportunity today to visit the Drachenschlucht and Landgrafenschlucht in the best winter hiking weather to take a close look at the natural spectacle of "frozen water" 🧊🧊. However, I would have liked spikes on my shoes in some sections of the Drachenschlucht and the ice makes the already narrow passages so narrow that you have to turn lengthways to get through 😀. I also started quite early in the day and so the oncoming traffic was limited.
This tour has been on my hiking list for a long time. Today I finally tackled it. The start through the Drachenschlucht was rather disappointing. The area around the Drachenstein and the path through the Landgrafenschlucht, which I think is more beautiful, made up for the initial disappointment. All in all a highly hyped tour, but I think there are clearly better tours. Would recommend the tour in the golden autumn. And of course during the week.
From the parking lot it went moderately uphill, then through the narrow and wet gorge, to the Hohe Sonne 🌞, further back via Weinstrasse. The small and large 🐉 Drachenstein, further towards Marienthal and finally through the endless, narrow and very slippery Landgrafenschlucht.
