June 22, 2022, Vesijärven kierros

Lake tours are the most classic cycling routes in many places, including in the Lahti region. Vesijärvi is usually bypassed by road, but it can also be done on gravel roads. This route is long and varied. It gives a good overview of gravel cycling in Päijät-Hämee. In addition, there are nice landscapes and nice rest stops along the way. Shortening the route in the middle of everything is not really possible, although it can of course be speeded up by switching from gravel roads to larger thoroughfares. Of course, if you want, you can go around the lake in two parts and spend the night in Vääksy, in the middle of the journey. Or you can decide the route already in Vääksy and travel back to Lahti by ship! The first part of the route follows the outdoor trails in Salpauselka. Then we gradually move to a hilly forest and country landscape. The first actual rest stop is in Kurhila, at about 56 kilometers. Shortly after the village of Kurhila, we reach Toinelle Salpausellä on the isthmus between Vesijärvi and Päijänte, climb Aurinkuvuori and reach Vääksy. In Vääkssy, ideal places to take a break are the idyllic Franskalainen village shop and the cafes along the canal. The thirstiest head to Kanava Panimo's terrace to get to know the award-winning, local beers. The roads on the return journey are wider and the terrain more gentle. We still stay on sand roads, except for the last dozen or so.
