The Old Faithful Lower General Store to Morning Glory Pool Bike Trail in Yellowstone National Park offers a 2-mile round-trip journey along a level, paved path. Starting near the Old Faithful Inn, cyclists can explore numerous geysers and thermal features en route to the famous Morning Glory Pool. Bicycles are prohibited on boardwalks and the unpaved trail beyond Morning Glory Pool leading to Biscuit Basin; however, bike racks are available for parking, so you explore these amazing geothermic features on foot. Be aware: the trail can be very, very crowded with pedestrians, so early morning or evening rides are recommended.

Morning Glory Pool

Highlight • Natural Monument

Morning Glory Pool is a hot spring located in the Upper Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park. The crystal blue water in the spring is the result of ultra-purified water that has risen its way through the Earth. The yellowing edges of the pool are caused by bacteria that lives in the extremely hot 157.6°F (69.8°C) water. The spring has been measured to be 23 feet (7 m) deep.

White Dome Geyser (in Lower Geyser Basin)

Highlight • Natural Monument

Impressive hot spring geyser cone right off the side road with reliably regular times of spouting water high in the air

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the overall difficulty of this touring bicycle route?

This combined touring route is considered moderate to challenging for a touring cyclist. While dedicated bike paths like the Old Faithful Lower General Store to Morning Glory Pool bike trail are generally easy and flat, connecting them via portions of the Grand Loop Road significantly increases the difficulty due to its length, elevation changes, and heavy vehicle traffic.

What kind of bike is best suited for this route?

A hybrid or mountain bike is strongly recommended for this route. While road bikes might handle the paved sections, the Fountain Freight Road Bike Trail and Lone Star Trail include unpaved dirt and gravel sections that are much more comfortable and manageable with more robust tires.

What are the main points of interest I will see along the way?

You'll experience a wide array of Yellowstone's iconic features. Highlights include the famous Old Faithful Inn and the geyser itself, the vibrant Morning Glory Pool, and the Fountain Paint Pots. The route also offers unique perspectives of Grand Prismatic Spring and leads to the more secluded Lone Star Geyser.

What is the terrain like on the different sections of the route?

The terrain is quite varied. The Fountain Freight Road Bike Trail is an old dirt and gravel road. The Lone Star Trail is partially paved with sections of packed gravel and dirt. The Old Faithful & Morning Glory Pool Bike Trail is paved, though some sections may be deteriorating. The Grand Loop Road is a paved, two-lane road.

Where can I park to access this touring bicycle route?

Parking is available at various points along the Grand Loop Road and near major attractions like Old Faithful. For specific trailheads like the Fountain Freight Road Trail or Lone Star Trail, look for designated parking areas. Services are limited along much of the route, so plan your starting point accordingly.

What is the best time of year to cycle this loop?

To avoid peak crowds and heavy vehicle traffic, consider cycling in the spring or fall. During the summer, cycling early in the morning or late in the evening can also provide a more serene experience. Always check current park conditions and road openings.

Are dogs allowed on this touring bicycle route?

In Yellowstone National Park, pets are generally not allowed on trails or boardwalks. They are permitted in developed areas, in vehicles, and within 100 feet of roads and parking areas. This means dogs would not be allowed on the dedicated bike trails like Fountain Freight Road or Lone Star Trail.

Do I need a permit or pay an entrance fee for Yellowstone National Park?

Yes, you will need to pay an entrance fee to enter Yellowstone National Park. This fee covers entry for 7 days. Specific permits are not typically required for cycling on designated roads and bike paths within the park, but always check the official NPS website for the most current regulations.

What kind of wildlife might I encounter, and what safety precautions should I take?

Wildlife viewing opportunities are abundant, with bison and elk frequently seen. There's also a chance to spot bears (both black and grizzly). Always maintain a safe distance: at least 100 yards from bears and wolves, and 25 yards from bison and other wildlife. Carrying bear spray and knowing how to use it is highly recommended.

Does this route intersect with any other well-known trails?

Yes, the route incorporates and intersects with several other trails. You'll find sections of the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, Fairy Falls Trail, Lone Star Trail, and the Upper Geyser Basin Trail. It also passes through areas like Biscuit Basin and the Lower Geyser Basin.

Are there any places to get food or water along the route?

Services are limited along much of this route. While you'll find amenities near Old Faithful, such as the Old Faithful Inn and general stores, it's crucial to carry sufficient water and snacks, especially for the more remote sections. Plan your stops accordingly.
