The Burg-Nanstein-Weg is a circular route that starts and ends in Landstuhl. You can typically find parking options in the town, which serves as a convenient starting point for the hike.
Yes, the Burg-Nanstein-Weg is generally dog-friendly. However, please ensure your dog is kept on a leash, especially around historical sites and in areas where wildlife might be present. Always remember to clean up after your pet.
The trail offers a diverse experience throughout the year. Spring and summer provide lush greenery and pleasant temperatures, while autumn showcases beautiful fall foliage. Be aware that in autumn, fallen leaves can conceal uneven ground, and after heavy rain, sections can become muddy and slippery, requiring extra caution.
No, there are no permits or entrance fees required to hike the Burg-Nanstein-Weg itself. However, if you plan to enter Nanstein Castle, there may be an admission fee.
The trail features varied terrain, including "springy forest paths" through the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve. You'll encounter natural paths with roots, stones, and some unevenness. Sure-footedness is recommended, especially in certain sections and during wet conditions.
The route is rich in both history and nature. Key highlights include the majestic Nanstein Castle, the impressive Krämerstein Rock Formation, and the Bismarck Tower, Landstuhl. You'll also pass by the Heidenfelsen, a Gallo-Roman spring sanctuary, and the "Klimalinde."
The Burg-Nanstein-Weg is rated as "moderate" in difficulty. While it's not overly strenuous, its length of approximately 12.8 km and an ascent/descent of about 250 meters require a reasonable level of fitness. Beginners with some hiking experience should be able to complete it, but those new to hiking might find it challenging.
Yes, the Burg-Nanstein-Weg is a circular hike, meaning it starts and ends at the same point, typically in Landstuhl. This makes it convenient for parking and planning your day.
Yes, one notable spot is the beer garden located within Nanstein Castle, offering a chance to refresh yourself. Additionally, the trail begins and ends in the medieval town of Landstuhl, where you can find various amenities, including cafes and restaurants.
The trail offers several excellent viewpoints. From "Herrengärtchen," you can enjoy beautiful views over the Landstuhl Bruch and even spot the Ramstein Airbase. The Bismarck Tower, Landstuhl and the Marian Chapel also provide panoramic vistas extending deep into the North Palatinate Mountain Region.
Yes, the Burg-Nanstein-Weg intersects with several other official trails. Sections of the route overlap with paths such as the Rundwanderweg Landstuhl L2, Jakobsweg Speyer – Metz, and the Saar-Pfalz-Weg, among others.
A great tour. Not a high level of difficulty, but still went up and down a bit. Beautiful trails, interesting trails in beautiful forests with rock formations and quirky trees. The way to Nanstein Castle was humane and fun. The castle was interesting and historical. Interesting. I really enjoyed the tour.
Today it was time for a star tour again... 😊 and what a tour... because I was able to "collect" 4 scallop shells on the Nansteinweg. 🥰 All the buildings that were included in the star tour are marked with the stone that I (and some others here at Komoot) are really keen on. First there is the Catholic Holy Cross Chapel, the so-called "Old Chapel" from the 15th century with paintings and Saint James, which I was unable to admire because the chapel was unfortunately closed off - although the sign said "open". 😏 Towards the end of the tour I reached the Nanstein castle ruins from the 12th-16th centuries with a coat of arms stone in the portal that dates back to the 16th century. Finally, there was the Sickingische Zehtscheune, which originally dates back to the 14th century but was rebuilt in the 18th/19th century. Century, and the Catholic parish church of St. Andreas, formerly the Marienkapelle (15th century). The tomb of Franz von Sickingen (16th century) is located to the side of the facade of the former watchtower from the 13th century. In the church there is also a statue of St. James from the 18th century; unfortunately the gates here were also locked.
The Burg-Nanstein Trail is a wonderful circular hiking trail that showcases the diversity of the region around Landstuhl. Pleasant forest floor, beautiful views, and a wealth of history accompany you on this hike.
Today we were on the final tour for this year with the hiking friends of Saarland. At the castle we stopped for refreshments before heading back to the car.
... of the Saarland hiking friends. A very beautiful hike where you have to be able to block out the background noise all around you.
In itself it was a pretty nice tour, but the car traffic was always very annoying. When I went to the Bismarck Tower around the U.S. When I walked around the base and heard loudspeakers there, it was over for me. It's a shame, because the section along the rocks was really beautiful.
A wonderfully beautiful hike through the Palatinate Forest ☀️. We were initially concerned because it was supposed to be so hot. But 80% of the trail runs through the forest, making it pleasant and shady. Highlights include the Bismarck Tower, Nanstein Castle, and the Krämerstein, an impressive rock formation.
Yesterday we spontaneously went out with @Marcus, @Nadine, Ina and Philipp. Marcus had recently taken really great mushroom photos on a tour using a special technique. I really liked that. So we set off together yesterday from Landstuhl. We were a great group. Everyone was super relaxed and very nice. Admittedly, I didn't really have my SLR camera under control 😂, a good reason to practice. Marcus and Nadine kindly allowed me to add photos to the tour. The two of them took very nice pictures. I have labeled their pictures with their names. Thank you both for the invitation to come along, Alex and I had a lot of fun. We'd love to do it again 😀🙋🏼♀️.
