This route was planned by komoot.
The full circular route around Greifensee is approximately 20.9 km (13 miles) long. Komoot estimates the duration to be around 5 hours and 20 minutes, assuming a steady pace without extended breaks.
While Komoot rates the full 20.9 km circular hike as 'difficult' due to its length, much of the path directly around the lake is relatively flat and easy to walk. It requires good fitness for the entire loop. For beginners or families, there are options to shorten the hike by utilizing ferry services at various points around the lake. Some barrier-free sections also exist between Aaspitz at Greifensee and the town of Greifensee.
The trail offers varied terrain. You'll find long stretches of gravel paths (about 14 km), as well as sections of asphalt (2.83 km), unpaved paths (1.45 km), and paved areas (939 m). The route is generally flat, but there can be some gentle uphill sections, for example, when ascending from Maur towards Forch. Footbridges allow access through reed areas.
The hike offers several notable sights. You'll pass through the charming historic village of Greifensee, with its castle, church, and half-timbered houses. Enjoy beautiful views of the lake, especially from the Fällanden Ferry Terminal. The Greifensee Nature Reserve is a significant highlight, offering rich flora and fauna.
The Greifensee circular hike is renowned for its natural beauty, particularly within the Greifensee Nature Reserve. This area is home to over 400 plant species and 120 migratory bird species. Keep an eye out for a large cormorant colony, water rails, and various rare duck species and common terns. The trail also winds through sparse lakeside forests and extensive reed belts.
The Greifensee circular hike is enjoyable year-round. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and beautiful scenery, with migratory birds active in spring and vibrant foliage in autumn. Summer is popular for combining the hike with swimming in the lake. Even in winter, the flat paths can be accessible, though conditions may vary, and some amenities might be closed.
The trail is easily accessible by public transport, making it a convenient excursion destination from Zurich. Specific parking information can vary depending on your starting point around the lake. Many villages around Greifensee offer public parking facilities, often near ferry terminals or train stations. Check local signage for parking regulations and fees.
Yes, the Greifensee circular hike is generally dog-friendly. However, as much of the route passes through the Greifensee Nature Reserve, it is crucial to keep dogs on a leash to protect the local wildlife and sensitive ecosystems. Always clean up after your dog.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Greifensee circular trail or to access the Greifensee Nature Reserve. However, visitors are expected to respect the conservation rules, such as staying on marked paths and not disturbing wildlife.
Yes, the route around Greifensee intersects with several other official trails. Notably, it covers a significant portion of the Greifensee Rundweg (62%) and also passes through sections of the Glatt-Route (41%), Riedikon - Maur Schifflände (29%), and Greifensee - Fällanden Rohr (20%).
Yes, there are various options for refreshments and meals along the Greifensee circular hike. The historic town of Greifensee and other villages around the lake offer cafes, restaurants, and picnic areas. You'll find opportunities to stop for a break and enjoy local cuisine or a packed lunch.
This tour is not strenuous. Everything is very flat and there are no inclines to be overcome. The paths are almost exclusively from Merkel, there is very rarely a concrete zone (through the village in Greifensee). I can imagine that on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in summer the place rocks! It will be teeming with families, those who love swimming, campers and other open-air fanatics. There are sections where there are a lot of cyclists - sometimes it's quite annoying, but fortunately not everywhere. I recommend this tour to warm up for the summer, to get your basic condition going again. You walk past many campsites where you can eat - it's all self-service and simply designed - just camping :-)
Beautiful circular hike around the Greifensee, with many places to grill, very suitable for cyclists with prams.
@Deleted User yes mini from home again and again round and round🚶♀️🚶♀️🚶♀️
Today I didn't cycle around Lake Greifensee 🚴♂️, but instead hiked around it 🥾, the hike was very beautiful ☀️.
Very beautiful lake, great round. I find it pleasant that the hiking trail and bike path/roller blades run separately from each other. You often hike right by the water 🥾🥾⛵️💦 This lake is a nature reserve and therefore hardly developed. Ornithologists will definitely get their money's worth here. Only the town of Greifensee borders directly on the lake, but without obstructing the passage. Please note for the summer months: there is little to no shade on this tour 🌞, but there are many nice rest areas, often with swimming opportunities 👙
When the weather was a bit rainy, we tackled the tour. We loved the nature reserve and the many birds/ducks. The hiking trail is very well developed. There are a few restaurants and campsites right along the way. In summer, most of the way is in the blazing sun.
