Hiking

The jade-coloured Muncho Lake on the Alaska Highway is a wonderful area for hiking, and the Stone's Sheep Trail is perfect for exploring the quiet, secluded landscape. Mountains with snow-capped peaks form the backdrop while, in summer, colourful wildflowers dot the green meadows. You’ll be able to spot a range of wild animals, including the stone sheep that inspired the name of the trail.

You’ll start from a car park off the Alaska Highway built on a large alluvial cone of Muncho Lake (a deposit of loose rock). The trail entrance is marked with a cairn. Head eastwards over an artificial dyke then past remnants of buildings dating from the construction of the Highway in the 1940s. A little further on you’ll spot the hoodoos – stone pillars formed by erosion – and a small waterfall. If you’re feeling nimble you can climb the crests of the drainage system to get a better view of Muncho Lake.

Muncho Lake is considered one of the highlights along the Alaska Highway. The aquamarine blue, twelve-kilometer-long mountain lake shines like a jewel in the middle of the landscape. Its name comes from the language of the Kaska First Nation and means "big lake."
