Hiking

The Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region is best known for its lakes, bays and the mighty fjord. However, it also boasts the impressive, towering mountains of the Monts-Valin National Park. The Pic de la Tête de Chien trail takes you to one of its peaks and offers glorious views. It’s a challenging hike, so dress appropriately and wear quality hiking footwear.

The hike starts from the national park information centre on the Valin river. A flat section through forest kicks things off, with occasional lake views between the trees. Soon, the gradient increases and you’ll ascend to the summit, where superb views await. Admire the river valley and the landscape’s rugged, rocky and often tree-lined slopes. You might even spot a few moose.

Entry to the national park costs around ten dollars and it’s well worth it for the 25-kilometre (15.5 mi) network of varied trails. L'Éternel Spa, a thermal spa set among the peaks is the perfect place to unwind after your adventures.

Easy start but the last 2 km are much harder. Beautiful walk, be careful to pay your entrance fee. About $9 a day
