Point Pleasant Park, at the southern end of the Halifax peninsula, has wonderful coastal landscapes and a rich history. The park is around 75 hectares (0.75 square kilometres) in size and has a network of paths covering almost 40 kilometres (25 mi). This Tour explores the Sailors’ Memorial Way, which takes you along the coast and then back through the middle of the park.

As you walk along Black Rock Beach, you can look out over the hustle and bustle of Halifax harbour and catch a glimpse of the Sailors' Memorial, a mighty anchor commemorating the men and women in the Canadian Navy who were lost at sea during peacetime.

Where the park stands today was previously an Amntu'kati, or spiritual place, and an important gathering place for the Mi'kmaq. More recently, the area near the harbour served as a British defence site, and you can still walk along the Cambridge Battery, or stop to admire the Prince of Wales Tower. In summer, performances of Shakespeare’s plays take place in Point Pleasant Park, so don't be surprised if you suddenly come across Macbeth at Cambridge Battery.

Cambridge Battery

Highlight • Historical Site

The Cambridge Battery serves as a reminder that the area of the park was once an important defensive site. Today, the area experiences more vibrant times, for example during Shakespeare by the Sea in the summer. At that time, theatrical performances are staged with the decorated Cambridge Battery as a backdrop.
