Hiking

This hike takes you from the confluence of the Main and Rhine into the vineyards near Mainz. Climb the observation tower at the Main harbor if you want to enjoy a view of the landscape that your route will take you through today. Once you have left the floodplain landscape on the Main to the north, the path leads up into the vineyards, where the eponymous loess crunches under your feet. The mineral-rich sediment consists of rocks that were ground into dust by glaciers during the Ice Age and is one of the reasons for the good quality of the local wines.

At the highest point of the tour at the Fähncheskreuz you can enjoy a wonderful view all the way to the Feldberg in the Taunus. When you have returned to the starting point of your circular hike, a leisurely rest at the wine tasting stand is a great way to end your day.

Fähncheskreuz

Highlight • Monument

The "Fähnchenkreuz" (more commonly called "Fähncheskreuz") is a well-known wayside cross and industrial monument in the region, though it is not located directly in Ingelheim, but in the neighboring Mainz-Kostheim (Wiesbaden).

Compact information about the Fähncheskreuz

History: The original stone wayside cross was erected in 1697 at an old crossroads on Steigweg. Its name derives from a distinctive metal weather vane attached to the top of the cross.

The base: The current solid Baroque base dates from 1783 and was donated by the then mayor, Franz Kaltenbach.

Archaeological find: In 1895, the upper half of a Roman gravestone belonging to a soldier from the 1st century AD was discovered beneath the cross, indicating a long history of settlement at this location (near the Roman Castellum Mattiacorum).

Significance today: It is considered a landmark of Kostheim and serves as a popular viewpoint in the Rhine-Main Regional Park. From there, one has a sweeping view across the vineyards to the Main and Rhine rivers.

Location: Oberer Sampelweg, 55246 Wiesbaden-Kostheim.

Today I stopped in Mainz-Kostheim to do my 4th Riesling loop "Loess and Clay". I started in Kostheim at the parking lot on the Maaraue and then always followed the signs - but not clockwise as recommended, but counterclockwise. The route was well signposted and unfortunately that was about it for the positive impressions. Almost exclusively asphalt (bike-friendly and barrier-free), …

Asphalt throughout, more like a bike ride 🤷‍♀️

Then there was loess and clay, it felt like 95% asphalt, also a walking path without any highlights. Well, at least a little moved...

Today's hike showed that this year's grape harvest is almost complete, which gave us an ever-increasing desire for tarte flambée and Federweißer.
