The trail is easily accessible by public transport. You can reach the Schlachtensee area via the S-Bahn (S1 line) to the Schlachtensee station, or the Krumme Lanke area via the U-Bahn (U3 line) to the Krumme Lanke station. Both stations are very close to the respective lakes and trailheads.
Yes, parking is generally available in the vicinity of both Schlachtensee and Krumme Lanke. However, as the area is very popular, especially on nice days, public transport is often recommended to avoid potential parking difficulties.
The terrain is mostly flat and consists of wide, comfortable footpaths, often paved or accessible paths suitable for various skill levels. While largely smooth, some sections may have uneven ground due to rocks or tree roots. There can also be a few stairs at the start and endpoints. For a slight challenge and elevated views, consider the alternative 'Höhenweg' on the left bank of Krumme Lanke.
You can expect picturesque scenery dominated by dense, wooded forest providing ample shade, especially around Schlachtensee. The trails hug the shorelines, offering continuous views of the clean, high-quality waters of both Schlachtensee and Krumme Lanke. You'll also pass numerous bathing areas, sunbathing lawns, and scattered villas. Keep an eye out for various bird species like cormorants, swans, coots, ducks, and even grey herons.
Yes, the trail is largely considered easy to moderate, making it suitable for a wide range of joggers, including beginners. The individual loops around Schlachtensee (approx. 5.5-7 km) and Krumme Lanke (approx. 2.8-3.8 km) are relatively flat and can be completed by most fitness levels. Combining both lakes results in a run of about 10 km.
The trail is enjoyable year-round. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and beautiful foliage. Summer is popular for combining jogging with a swim in the lakes, but the paths can be quite busy on nice days. Winter jogging is also possible, but be mindful of potential icy patches.
Yes, dogs are generally allowed on the trails in Grunewald. However, it is important to keep them on a leash, especially in designated protected areas and near bathing zones, to protect wildlife and ensure the comfort of other visitors.
No, there are no permits required or entrance fees to jog on the trails around Schlachtensee and Krumme Lanke in Grunewald. The area is freely accessible to the public.
Along the route, you'll find several inviting spots. Don't miss the View of the Schlachtensee swimming area, various bathing areas and sunbathing lawns like the one at Schlachtensee S-Bahn station, and the Wonderful swimming bay. The Krumme Lanke Bathing Area and the Krumme Lanke Swimming Area are also popular. You'll also pass through the Grunewald Protected Shore.
Yes, the route intersects with several other paths. Notably, it covers a significant portion of the Wannseeweg and also passes through sections of the Dahlem Route, Nikolassee Route, and the Fischerhüttenweg.
Yes, there are inviting beer gardens and restaurants in the vicinity. A well-known option is the historic "Fischerhütte" at Schlachtensee, offering a pleasant spot for refreshments after your run.
Nice round with lots and lots of green in the middle of Berlin. We did the tour again with our baby in the Croozer. There were occasional spots that were very sandy and made it difficult to push, but overall it went well. The north side of Schlachtensee is very attractive with the ancient oaks and beeches that line the path. Plus there's always a great view of the lake. There was a lot going on at Schlachtensee today. People, bikes, dogs... The south side in particular is, as always, full of life. The Krumme Lanke, on the other hand, was almost deserted apart from the bathing areas on the southern bank and was therefore quiet and relaxing. Pure nature. On the north side, the bank protection fence is already well overgrown, so it doesn't look so defensive and repulsive.
