Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the trail start and is there parking available?

The Mishe Mokwa and Sandstone Peak Loop typically starts from the Sandstone Peak Trailhead. There is a parking lot available at the trailhead, but it can fill up quickly, especially on weekends. Arriving early in the morning is recommended to secure a spot.

How long does it typically take to complete this hike?

This loop is a moderate to challenging hike that generally takes around 3.5 to 4.5 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how long you spend enjoying the views. The Komoot tour data suggests an average duration of approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes.

Is this loop suitable for beginners?

While rated as moderate to challenging, this hike involves significant elevation gain and some rocky, gravelly sections, especially on the final ascent to Sandstone Peak. It's not ideal for absolute beginners, but those with some hiking experience and good fitness should find it rewarding. The descent can also be steep and slippery.

What are the main highlights and viewpoints along the way?

You'll encounter several notable features. The Sandstone Peak summit offers expansive 360-degree views. Other highlights include the impressive Balanced Rock and Echo Cliffs in Carlisle Canyon, the shaded Split Rock Picnic Area, and optional spur trails to Inspiration Point and Tri Peaks for additional vistas.

What kind of scenery and terrain can I expect?

The trail offers a diverse landscape, transitioning from chaparral-covered hillsides to rugged canyons and shaded riparian areas. You'll walk through varied terrain, including dirt paths, rocky sections, and some gravelly stretches, particularly as you gain elevation towards the peak. The views from the higher points are panoramic, often including the Pacific Ocean and Channel Islands.

What is the best time of year to hike this loop?

The best time to hike is during the cooler months, from fall through spring. It's best to avoid hot summer afternoons due to significant sun exposure on much of the trail. Early mornings are generally ideal to beat the heat and secure parking.

Is this trail dog-friendly?

Yes, dogs are generally allowed on this trail. However, they must be kept on a leash at all times. Be sure to bring plenty of water for your dog, especially on warmer days, as there are limited water sources along the route.

Are there any permits or fees required to hike in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area?

No, there are typically no entrance fees or permits required to hike this specific trail within the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. However, always check the National Park Service website for any current regulations or advisories before your visit.

Does the trail intersect other well-known paths?

Yes, the route extensively uses sections of the Backbone Trail and the Mishe Mokwa Trail. You'll also find smaller portions of the Sandstone Peak Trail and the Tri Peaks Trail.

What should I pack for this hike?

Given the trail's length and exposure, it's essential to bring plenty of water (more than you think you'll need), snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and sturdy hiking shoes with good ankle support. Layers of clothing are also recommended as temperatures can vary. A map or GPS device is also a good idea.

Are there any facilities like restrooms or picnic areas along the route?

The Split Rock Picnic Area is a pleasant, shaded spot along the Mishe Mokwa section where you can take a break. Restroom facilities are typically available at the main trailheads, but not consistently along the entire loop.
