This route was planned by komoot.
This trail is rated as moderate. The terrain is highly varied, featuring passages through meadows, ancient ice-age dunes, and diverse forests. You'll encounter rocky and alpine sections, particularly around the 'Gans' rock formation and along cliff edges, which require sure-footedness and concentration. Expect narrow trails, hollow paths, and stony ground in parts, as well as steep slopes above the Nahe river.
The Classic tour Rheingrafenstein - Nahe valley is approximately 9.5 km (about 6 miles) long. Komoot estimates the duration to be around 2 hours 44 minutes of pure moving time. However, allowing for breaks and enjoying the views, a typical hike might take 3 to 4 hours.
The trail offers numerous highlights and stunning panoramic views. Key points include the Emil-Jakob Trail with its rocky path and views over the Nahe Valley, the impressive View from the Gans (Bad Kreuznach), and the historic Rheingrafenstein Castle Ruins. You'll also see the Rheingrafenstein Rock, varied forest and meadow landscapes, and serene views of the Nahe River.
Specific parking information is not detailed in the provided sources, but the trail is often accessed from Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg. Look for designated hiking parking areas in or near this town, which serves as a common starting point for routes in the area.
Yes, the area around Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg is generally well-connected by public transport, making it possible to reach the trailhead without a car. Check local bus and train schedules for connections to Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg.
The trail can be enjoyed during most seasons. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and beautiful foliage. Summer is also suitable, but be aware that some sections are exposed to strong sun, so sun protection is advisable. Winter hiking is possible, but conditions may be more challenging due to potential ice or snow on rocky sections.
While dogs are generally allowed on hiking trails in Germany, specific leash rules for this particular route are not detailed. Given that parts of the trail are within the Naturschutzgebiet Gans und Rheingrafenstein and include rocky, alpine sections, it's highly recommended to keep dogs on a leash for their safety and to protect wildlife.
There are no entrance fees or permits required to hike the Classic tour Rheingrafenstein - Nahe valley. However, as it passes through the Naturschutzgebiet Gans und Rheingrafenstein (nature reserve), it's crucial to respect all nature protection rules. This includes staying on marked paths, not disturbing wildlife, and refraining from picking plants. Be aware of warnings regarding oak processionary moth caterpillars in oak trees, especially during late spring and early summer.
Due to its moderate difficulty, including significant ascents and rocky, alpine sections, this trail might be challenging for very young children or absolute beginners. Hikers should have a reasonable level of fitness and be sure-footed. Families with older, experienced hiking children might enjoy it, but beginners should consider shorter or less demanding routes first.
Yes, the route is part of a network of trails. It fully encompasses the CLASSICtour Rheingrafenstein and overlaps significantly with other routes such as Tour Natur (65%) and VITALtour Rheingrafenstein (56%). You may also encounter shorter sections of trails like INTROtour Rheingrafenstein and MTB Naheland-Trails Bad Kreuznach.
Yes, opportunities for rest are available. The area around Altenbaumburg offers gastronomy options. Additionally, there are places like the Huttental where you can take a break. It's always a good idea to carry sufficient water and snacks, especially on longer hikes.
A wonderful tour that I can only recommend. Well signposted it goes uphill and downhill again, but the views are definitely worth it.
After eating so much over the last two days, a digestive walk was a must today.
9.5 km *** 434 m up / down 3:33 h including / 3:08 h excluding breaks This middle of the 3 beautiful Rheingrafenstein tours (Intro / Classic Tour / Vital Tour) first takes us on wide, partly gravelly forest paths towards Salinental near Bad Kreuznach, before we turn back onto the partly stony, partly rooty path above the Salinental towards the castle ruins. Now, just behind the Gans, there are really wonderful views over the Nahe Valley and towards Rotenfels, which is often described as the highest steep face north of the Alps. Then we turn back towards Heingrafenstein Castle, near which we were initially. First wide, then narrow and finally over steps it goes down to the entrance to the Rheingrafenstein castle ruins, which we didn't visit today - but the detour is always worth it! Now over steps down into the Kehrenbachtal and through the wide forest, then narrow to the Meeressand waypoint. It is now not far to the hiking portal, our starting and finishing point. A head for heights is not required as long as you don't stand directly on the edge of the rock to enjoy the views around the Gans or at the top of the castle ruins. Sure-footedness is not a bad idea because of the occasional stony or rooty surface - also a bit slippery when wet. We also had a fall on the tour, but not where one would have expected on slightly damp ground. But luckily nothing happened apart from a few scratches and my legs turning blue afterwards - just a few days later everything was perfect again. Mark: Very well marked with the orange Classic Tour symbol that is well known in the area. Rest: In a word: sufficient. Getting there: Car ==> A61, Bad Kreuznach exit, exit in the sharp curve in front of the factory of a well-known car tire manufacturer and then continue towards Bosenheim, past it towards Frei-Laubersheim (B428), Hackenheim / Volxheim exit (= 2nd exit towards Hackenheim), Towards Hackenheim and through. Shortly after the end of the town, turn left to the Rheingrafenstein and Gans nature reserve / Spreitel excursion area. Follow the street until the parking lot at the sports field appears on the left - go there. Please don't drive in opposite, this is the bus turning point - parking is forbidden there (not everyone notices that). BUS ==> Status at the time of the hike: Bus line 203 from Schloßpark or Bad Kreuznach train station in the direction of the Spreitel excursion area, exit at the end stop directly at our start/finish - there is hardly anything more ideal for tours in this area. The buses here only run hourly on weekends. On weekdays, the best stop is Karslhalle im Salinental. Access on foot in the direction of Salinen, across the long parking lot, then left. From here at the latest, just before the pedestrian bridge over the Nahe (which we do NOT walk), the access route is signposted.
While traveling in the hometown of my late wife with my current partner, I was finally able to hike to the Gans. Although I had already been to the Rheingrafenstein castle ruins almost 25 years ago, this time I was hiking. It was beautiful, and even though it kept raining, the view of Bad Münster was worth it.
We parked in one of the many hiking parking lots on the Kuhberg (Cow Mountain). The tour is particularly impressive with the paths above the Nahe with great views, such as "Porta Nava" and the views at the "Gans". Another highlight is the Rheingrafenstein ruin. From there, stairs lead down (don't worry - you have to climb back up sometime). There are countless benches along the way where you can take a break now and then.
A wonderful tour that first leads briefly through meadowland and then goes a few kilometers through the forest, past the fitness trail and forest playground. If you follow the recommended route, you will first come to the Porta Nava viewpoint, which offers an impressive view. It continues, slightly uphill and partly with stony ground to the next point, the goose. This is the highest point above the Nahe. After a sharp right-hand bend, towards the observatory, it goes over a rocky passage to the Rheingrafenstein ruins. The vantage point shape also offers a breathtaking view here. The steps then wind their way down in a serpentine fashion. Once at the bottom, a shady path gradually leads uphill towards the hiking car park. Before this is reached, however, we pass the stage destination, sea sand. Now the parking lot is within reach. A beautiful, slightly challenging tour that is also easy to walk for children.
Super nice tour with great viewpoints on the Nahe. Also well signposted, just follow the "Classic" sign :)
It was a super great hike to clear your head and enjoy.
