The Penedès color palette dresses up every season. Its green tones encompass vineyards, cypresses, pines, poplars, riverside reeds and endless crops. The perennial ochers spread between the earth and the stones that cement its towns, hermitages, farmhouses, wineries and castles. This Route takes you to explore the wonders of this region on its extensive gravel tracks.

The route begins and ends at the Vilafranca del Penedès train station and extends more than 160 kilometers that take you to visit humble Romanesque hermitages, the ancient castles of Penyafort and Castellet, beautiful towns with a medieval feel and wineries surrounded by a tapestry of vineyards where you can taste traditional cava. As if that were not enough, the majestic mountain of Montserrat appears on the horizon in many sections, giving the journey an unforgettable touch.

This itinerary is ideal in spring and autumn, and also on many winter days, thanks to the mild temperatures of Penedés and its numerous sunny days. Along the journey you pass through towns that have the tourist services you may need. Therefore, it is not necessary to carry too much luggage, but rather the desire to enjoy every pedal stroke through these lands of wine and sun.

Castellet Castle

Highlight • Castle

Castellet Castle dates from the 10th century, originally little more than a large fortified house with a watchtower, it was intended to protect the Hispanic March of al-Andalus.

Over time and the successive occupants it did not fall into disuse thanks to its strategic position between Garraf and Penedès. Today it is a tourist attraction, thanks to its state of conservation and its privileged location on the meander of the Foix River, today occupied by the Foix reservoir. There is a terrace bar, very popular with bikers and cyclists, just off the road.

From this viewpoint we can see the largest lake in the Parc dels Talls. These lakes, known as "pèlags", have been formed by the phreatic flooding of old gypsum quarries, in an example of the renaturalization and recovery of a mining area. The area is very rich in diversity of flora and fauna.

Trail Reviews

Rafaloy Arenas
May 2, 2024, PENEDES 360 recortada

"Penedès tourism" "The idea is to cycle through the towns, the wineries, the hermitages along paths, quiet roads, tracks that will take you to charming vineyards, with Montserrat framing them as the omnipresent decoration. The route is designed to be done with a gravel bike or similar, but an e-mountain bike is also a good option. The route has no technical difficulties: there are many sections of paved rural road and rolling track, although there are some broken road links." The positive slope marked by the GPS is 1750+.
