The Iron Trail between Gedern and Hirzenhain is a cultural-historical and geological circular trail with 10 information boards and wonderful views in the middle of a beautiful low mountain landscape. It starts and ends at Gedern Castle, which offers adventures such as a trolley trail in the idyllic castle park, a soap factory, the tourist information office or the cultural-historical museum in the "Alte Schmiede" information center.
The trail leads past a former quarry on the edge of Gedern, which provides deep insights into ancient layers of earth. A gentle meadow valley lined with hedges and accompanied by numerous cherry trees opens up views towards Hoherodskopf and as far as the Rhine-Main area. At the hamlet of Schönhausen you can take an idyllic rest on a seating area before hiking through a wide valley towards Wenings, where you reach the "Schau ins Land" rest and viewing area with a comfortable seating area and another breathtaking view.
Through fields, meadows and forests you will pass a paradisiacal biotope and reach Hirzenhain, where the iron art casting museum is worth a visit. From here you can also shorten the tour by bus. If you continue along the path, you will reach the Spießweiher, a true gem for nature lovers, across meadows and fields with a view of the Hoherodskof and the town of Steinberg. From here you will cross one last valley and climb one last ascent past a former quarry back to the starting point of Gedern, where you can enjoy the range of restaurants on offer.
