This route was planned by komoot.
The main parking area is typically located near the Felsenmeer Information Center at the foot of the rocky sea. This is a convenient starting point for various circular routes, including this one.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, due to the uneven and rocky terrain, especially when climbing directly over the Felsenmeer, ensure your dog is agile and comfortable with such conditions. Always keep your dog on a leash and be mindful of other hikers.
The Felsenmeer circular route is enjoyable year-round. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and beautiful foliage. Summer can be warm, but the forested sections provide shade. In winter, the rocks can be slippery if wet or icy, so extra caution and appropriate footwear are essential.
No, there are generally no permits or entrance fees required to hike the Felsenmeer circular route or other trails within the Geo-Naturpark Bergstraße-Odenwald. However, parking at the Felsenmeer Information Center may incur a fee.
The terrain is varied. You'll encounter the unique 'sea of stones' with massive, ancient rock columns and boulders, which can be uneven and require careful footing. There are also designated dirt paths, forested trails, and some paved sections. Directly climbing over the rocks is a significant part of the experience.
While the route is rated 'moderate' due to its length and elevation changes, it is generally suitable for families and beginners with good basic fitness. There are easier switchback paths available to bypass the direct rock scrambling sections, making it accessible for various skill levels. Sturdy footwear is highly recommended.
The route offers several fascinating points of interest. You'll experience the geological marvel of the Felsenmeer itself, with its ancient rock formations. Other highlights include the Amphibian Pond, the View from Borstein, and the Ohly Tower on Felsberg, which offers panoramic views. You can also see Roman quarrying marks on some of the stones.
Yes, the Felsenmeer circular route - Odenwald intersects with several other official trails. Notably, it covers 100% of the Rundwanderweg Lautertal 1: Felsenmeer-Rundweg and significant portions of the Rundwanderweg Lautertal 3 and the Alemannenweg Etappen 3,4,5.
Yes, the Felsenmeer Information Center, located at the foot of the rocky sea, provides public toilets and often has a restaurant or café nearby. It's a good place to start and end your hike with amenities available.
Given the varied terrain, sturdy, closed-toe shoes with good grip (like hiking boots or athletic shoes) are essential. Bring enough water, especially on warmer days, and snacks. A small backpack, weather-appropriate clothing, and a camera to capture the unique scenery are also recommended.
When encountering the main 'sea of rocks,' you have two primary options: you can actively scramble and climb over the massive boulders, which is invigorating and offers a unique experience, or you can use the easier switchback paths that wind around the rock formations. Choose the option that best suits your fitness level and comfort with uneven terrain.
Today we spontaneously went towards Felsenmeer and we were surprised by the beautiful winter impressions ❄️. A nice round on easy-to-walk paths with refreshment stops and an open kiosk at Felsenmeer 👍😊
A varied, mostly easy-to-walk trail through a sparse beech forest and along the edge of the forest. The area around the Felsenmeer (Sea of Rocks) is lively on weekends.
Very frosty round along great ice structures on the trees. Afterwards there was a warm-up stop at the Waldgaststätte am Borstein. 😀👋🏻
Beautiful pleasure tour in the Odenwald with two crossings of the impressive Felsenmeer💪
Last year Katarzyna brought really nice pictures from the Felsenmeer, and so a circular hike there had been on the list for a long time. Our starting point was very practical, because you don't have to pant uphill straight away, but first warm up a bit through forest and meadow paths before more and more funny boulders appear and then the wide "rock wall" is crossed twice. The whole thing is really interesting, but also well attended, even in winter. And if you are often out and about in the Palatinate Forest, you somehow miss the narrow, soft paths - we had already noticed that during the walk the day before.
Our hike today took us to the Bergstrasse Odenwald Geo-Nature Park, specifically to the Felsenmeer (Sea of Rocks). As is typical for Sundays, we were surrounded by many other people in the Felsenmeer. Nevertheless, away from the tourist hotspots, there were some very quiet sections through the wonderfully cool and shady beech forest. The Felsenmeer itself and the stories from Roman times (quarries, processing, and transport) are impressive. We finished off with a glass of Ebbelwoi (a local cider) in an African beer garden ☺
Once again we found traces of the Romans in the Odenwald. This time on the Felsberg near Reichenbach, where there is also a huge sea of rocks.
The weather was crying out for a hike today, it hadn't been this cool in a long time with the glorious sunshine. So we left the Wednesday drivers in the lurch and drove with adventurous dogs to our old home at Kuralpe. The tour led along narrow paths to Beedenkirchen, then along wide forest paths along the lower part of the Felsenmeer above Reichenbach, along a bird trail (we didn't meet any clever birds though), in a curve back to the upper Felsenmeer and over the Felsberg back to Kuralpe with a stop. Apart from the hustle and bustle at Felsenmeer that you'd expect during the holidays, we were pretty much alone in the forest on our tour. It was lovely!
