Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Very good asphalt, however, is of course also used by the locals (sometimes many cars, but on my tour were all considerate).

At the end of the footbridge there is a small staircase. This can be used wonderfully for an entry into the lake.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to the Hofjagdweg Trail, and where can I park?

The trail conveniently starts in Königs Wusterhausen, which is well-connected by S-Bahn and regional trains, making it easily accessible from Berlin. If you're driving, parking is generally available in Königs Wusterhausen, though specific parking areas for the trail are not explicitly designated. It's a good idea to check local parking options upon arrival.

Is the Hofjagdweg Trail suitable for families with children?

While many sections are accessible, the entire route may be challenging for younger children due to its length and varied terrain. There's also a specific warning about increased traffic and narrow roads between Krummensee and Groß Köris due to construction, which makes this stretch less safe for families. Consider shorter, paved sections for family outings.

What is the terrain like on the Hofjagdweg Trail?

The trail offers a diverse cycling experience. You'll find predominantly well-maintained cycle paths, asphalted side roads, and paved farm and forest tracks, making up about 67-69% of the route. However, be prepared for unpaved sections, including gravel (9-11%) and loose gravel (5-10%). Cobblestone sections are also present, particularly when passing through Krummensee and Groß Köris. A trekking bike or an all-terrain bike is recommended for comfort across these varied surfaces.

What can I see along the route?

The Hofjagdweg Trail is rich in history and natural beauty. You'll cycle past significant historical sites related to Prussian court hunting parties, including Königs Wusterhausen Castle. Scenic highlights include the peaceful meadow and river landscapes within the Unterspreewald, charming Spreewald villages like Groß Wasserburg and Krausnick, and a fish pond farm between Schlepzig and Lübben. Don't miss the Hofjagdweg between Krummensee and Bestensee, the South Shore of Lake Köthener, and the picturesque Spreewald pond landscapes.

Is the Hofjagdweg Trail dog-friendly?

Yes, dogs are generally allowed on the Hofjagdweg Trail. However, as much of the route passes through natural areas and villages, it's important to keep your dog on a leash, especially in nature reserves, near wildlife, and in populated areas, to ensure the safety and comfort of all users and local fauna.

What is the best time of year to cycle this route?

The best time to cycle the Hofjagdweg Trail is typically from spring to autumn (April to October). During these months, the weather is generally pleasant for cycling, and the natural landscapes are at their most vibrant. Summer offers longer daylight hours, but spring and autumn provide cooler temperatures and beautiful foliage, making for a very enjoyable experience.

Do I need any permits or pay entrance fees for the Dahme-Heideseen Nature Park?

No, you do not need specific permits or have to pay entrance fees to cycle through the Dahme-Heideseen Nature Park on the Hofjagdweg Trail. Access to the nature park is generally free. However, please respect the park's regulations, such as staying on marked paths and not disturbing wildlife.

Are there any cafes, pubs, or accommodation options along the route?

Yes, as the trail passes through several charming Spreewald villages like Groß Wasserburg, Krausnick, and eventually Lübben, you will find various opportunities for refreshments and accommodation. Lübben, in particular, offers a good selection of cafes, restaurants, and guesthouses, perfect for a break or an overnight stay.

Does the Hofjagdweg Trail intersect with other well-known paths?

Yes, the route shares sections with several other trails. Notably, it overlaps with parts of the Radweg Berlin-Dresden, the European walking route E10, Germany, Brandenburg, and the Gurkenradweg (Nord- und Ostring). You'll also find smaller sections that coincide with the Spreeradweg [Lübben↔Beeskow] and the Paul-Gerhardt-Weg Etappe 9.

What makes the Hofjagdweg Trail unique?

The Hofjagdweg Trail stands out for its unique blend of historical narrative and natural beauty. It traces the paths of Prussian royalty from the 18th and 19th centuries, offering a glimpse into court life. The trail is easily identified by its distinctive wild boar wearing a crown as its route marker. It seamlessly connects the historical exploration with the tranquil landscapes of the Dahme-Heideseen Nature Park and the unique Spreewald region, providing a rich cultural and natural experience.

Bike tour from KW to Lübben. The route was mostly asphalt until Schlepzig and then gravel next to kanals in Spreewald. The route until Schlepzig although shared in some places with road, goes through nice forest area.

Recently I was in Brandenburg for a few days to "relax" and there I came across a brochure - DahmeRadweg & Hofjagdweg. And ... what can I say ... the advertising worked. A nice bike ride (in my opinion) with a lot of interesting things to see along the way or just various options for bathing breaks. I found the almost abrupt change in landscape between the Dahme-Heideseen Nature Park and the Spreewald exciting. A small downer: at the level of Bettensee there is some construction work that will lead to more car traffic on the Hofjagdweg. Very uncomfortable. The path is too narrow to overtake with sufficient distance. Fortunately, the piece was shorter than feared.

Great Father's Day weather and fantastic scenery. But I expected the route to have more separated bike paths. And the Hofjagweg between Groß Köris and KW is nothing more than a bike path where cars are allowed to drive at 60 km

Unfortunately, a bridge is closed at the moment, but there is a detour. It was also driven on this tour.

We retirees had once again found a time to go on a bike tour together. In beautiful autumn weather, we cycled along the Hofjagdradweg and the Spree-Radweg to the tranquil town of Lübbenau, from where the train quickly took us back to Berlin.

Today we left Lübben and cycled on the Gurkenradweg and the Hofjagtradweg via Schlepzig Märkisch Buchholz Bestensee to Königs Wusterhausen
