This route was planned by komoot.
The adventure begins with a scenic 50-minute ride on a historic cogwheel railway from Wilderswil to Schynige Platte. The trailhead is right at the mountain station. You can find parking in Wilderswil, where the cogwheel railway departs.
The best time to hike this trail is typically between June and September. During these months, the alpine flowers are in full bloom, and the weather conditions are generally most favorable for enjoying the panoramic views.
While dogs are generally welcome on trails in Switzerland, it's important to check the specific regulations for the cogwheel railway, as they may have rules regarding pets. On the trail itself, dogs should be kept on a leash, especially due to the presence of wildlife and other hikers.
No specific hiking permits are required for the trail itself. However, you will need to purchase a ticket for the historic cogwheel railway from Wilderswil to Schynige Platte, which is how you access the trailhead. The trail is located within the broader region of the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch, a UNESCO World Heritage site, but there are no additional entrance fees for the trail.
The trail is generally rated as moderate. While not technically difficult, some sections can be rocky or steep, and the path is uneven in places. It is considered suitable for families with children over six who have some hiking experience. The main loop typically takes 2 to 3 hours to complete at a leisurely pace.
The trail offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks, as well as the turquoise waters of Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. Key highlights include the Leiterweg Staircase, the View of Lake Brienz, and the spectacular View of Lake Brienz from Oberberghorn. You'll also traverse meadows bursting with alpine flowers and might spot local wildlife like marmots.
The terrain varies, including grit, rock, and stones, with some sections being steep or uneven. Hikers should wear appropriate footwear such as stable trail running, trekking, or hiking shoes to ensure comfort and safety on the varied surfaces.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Panoramaweg Schynige Platte, ViaBerna Etappe 15, ViaBerna Etappe 14, and other local paths like Wanderweg Schynige Platte and Faulhornweg.
There are no facilities directly on the trail itself. However, at the Schynige Platte mountain station, where the trail begins and ends, you'll find a restaurant and other amenities. It's always a good idea to carry sufficient water and snacks for your hike.
This trail is renowned for its exceptional "scenery-to-effort ratio," offering grand alpine views for a moderate amount of effort. The journey itself begins with a nostalgic ride on a more than 100-year-old cogwheel train. Additionally, the nearby Alpine Garden and scheduled alphorn performances at Schynige Platte add to its unique charm, earning it the nickname "The Top of Swiss Tradition."
Besides appropriate hiking footwear, we recommend bringing layers of clothing suitable for changing mountain weather, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), sufficient water, snacks, and a camera to capture the stunning views. Trekking poles can also be helpful on some of the steeper or uneven sections.
By train from Spiez to Wilderswil and then by cogwheel train to Schynige Platte. We did the panoramic circular trail in beautiful weather.
We took the train to Wilderswil. From there, a historic cogwheel train took you at a leisurely pace in just under an hour to the Schynige Platte with its panoramic views, 1967m high above Interlaken. Even the drive through pastures and tunnels up the mountain takes the pace out of everyday life and lets us slowly immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of the Bernese Alps. The first steam trains ran up here as early as 1893 on largely the same route as today. But as early as 200 years ago, noble families were taken up the mountain by mule to see the unique Alpine panorama of the 4000m peaks. At that time something like tourism started and farm children sold milk and cheese to foreign visitors to the Alps. Arrived on the mountain, we were greeted musically by two alphorn players dressed in traditional costume. There were a lot of guests up here, but not nearly the crowds in Grindelwald. Many panoramic hikes are possible from the Schyniger Platte. Our small but fine tour first took us to the Daube 2076 viewing platform. On one side Interlaken with the deep blue shimmering water of Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, on the other side the 4000m peaks with the glaciers. The "Daube" was the right place to rest. We continued on a narrow ridge path to the Oberberghorn. Of course, Guido had to climb the summit at 2069m via steep stairs, some of which were made of wood. Angelika preferred to run around the mountain. On the further way it went up and down again and again, sometimes with ladders. And as usual in the mountains, we had to be careful because of the slopes and the risk of slipping. The run of almost 6 km in 1 1/2 hours does not correspond to our actual expenditure of time. We have enjoyed many wonderful views over the past few days. But what we were allowed to enjoy up here... that is without exaggeration a force. Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, the glaciers are close enough to touch, what a panorama, we couldn't get enough of each other. Every few meters we bent down to admire the stars, umbels and bells that bloom on the alpine pastures. Today we were given unforgettable impressions on this circular route. In the late afternoon we took the cog railway back to Wilderswil to make a small detour to Lauterbrunnen from there. The place is very tightly enclosed by gigantic rock faces that reach steeply into the sky. The landmark of Lauterbrunnen is the free-falling Staubbach waterfall with a height of 297m, the highest in Switzerland. The place has a total of 72 roaring waterfalls to offer. Happy but exhausted, we took the train back to our hostel. Inc
If I were a disc jockey, I would include the hike on the "Schynige Platte" in my "Records" collection. The 50-minute drive from Wilderswil to the Schynige Platte alone is pure romance. It's easy to dazzle the crowds from all over the world, which travels on the train and... takes photos of what pites and bites give.Only once you have arrived at the station, the whole splendor of the Oberland opens up to the viewer. On the one hand, the alpine world with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau and many more, (the Schreckhorn accompanies you almost at every step with its distinctive fin) on the other side, the winding Lake Thun and the turquoise colored Lake Brienz. If you like, you can enjoy the botanical alpine garden just above the train station, or fill your stomach in the "Schynige Platte" panorama restaurant, or... head straight for one or the other hiking trail to your feet, although the spirits argue about whether to go left or right first m. Incidentally, my highlight was not the obligatory ascent to the "Daube", although the view from up there could not be more unique, or the steep and somewhat daring ascent via the wooden stairs to the rock hole of the "Oberberghorn", from where you can get even more views and experienced an even bigger kick. no My highlight was of a completely different, if not downright "modest" nature. After descending the iron stairs at the hairpin bend of our hike (see map), the vastness of the alpine plateau presented itself before my eyes. I was deeply touched by the sight of the stony hiking trail winding its way slowly away into the distance. Sorry Eiger, excuse Mönch, sorry Jungfrau. That flashed me a lot more. By the way, if you want, you can hike down to Wilderswil. But I think that the "Schinige Platte" experience includes one or the other train ride in an open wagon. Jerking, jerking, canting and hard wooden benches included. Have fun.
Today I completed a long-planned tour* in perfect weather conditions. Car > drive > train > drive > APERITIF > hike > APE...no, but a decent meal > train > drive > car > drive > um...sleep! Note: UNOS (UnderFog AboveSun) strikes again. Those lucky enough to have the opportunity to experience and enjoy a fantastic day in the mountains. What I'm leaving out for once: comments / photo descriptions. Why? Simply because the text would always be the same: beautiful, sunny, blue sky, great view, sea of fog...that would get boring. What kind of mountains do you see? Well, I'll leave that up to the readers for once. And last but not least, regarding the photos: I won't change the order; the chronology of the tour / photos is as always...freely based on Komoot. All I can add is that the Garmin watch ripped me off... well, whoever chooses the right activity has a clear advantage... so the data is practically worthless (walking time 2:10 hours, speed around 3 km/h, effective elevation gain 375). Which is a shame on the one hand, but on the other hand, it doesn't matter, because I know what I've done, and I don't want to let it ruin my fantastic day. PS Uncharacteristically for me, but due to the very late return home, the many pictures, and other things, the tour report is delayed by a day. We'll survive... *Info https://www.myswitzerland.com/de-de/erlebnisse/schynige-platte/ https://www.jungfrau.ch/de-ch/schynige-platte/ https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schynige_Platte-Bahn Watch out for promotions for the railway and hotel industry!
The Schynige Platte is a popular tourist destination, short and worthwhile circular hiking trails with great vantage points and a beautiful mountain backdrop.

One of the most beautiful panoramic trails I have been able to hike so far. Landscape, view, train journey and the tradition just great 😀 The paths are not for bad runners, as they are often rocky and narrow. The steep ascent and descent also make it more difficult. But anyone who enjoys hiking should do this route when they are in the Rigion.
Simply a "must" if you like panoramic views all around. The climbs are steep, with some very high steps, but not too long if you are in average shape. The paths are always wide enough for at least one person and are usually gravelled. Unfortunately, however, they are also covered with very large, loose scree. On one climb there is an iron staircase with a handrail. The round trip can be completed in 2 hours 30 minutes with short breaks. Because of the coarse gravel, you must wear high, sturdy shoes. The cake and coffee in the mountain restaurant are only worth it for the view after the round. The service is just so-so, however. The apple strudel was unfortunately cold....
