Running

Embark on a moderate jogging adventure along the Jeep Arch Trail, a 3.6-mile (5.9 km) route that promises a unique desert experience. You will navigate a rugged landscape, starting with an intriguing passage through a culvert beneath railroad tracks. The trail then leads you across varied terrain, including slickrock and sandy washes, with some sections requiring careful scrambling. As you jog, you will gain 851 feet (259 metres) in elevation, enjoying panoramic views of red rock formations and distant glimpses of Arches National Park and the La Sal Mountains. The highlight of this approximately 50-minute journey is reaching the Gold Bar Arch, a distinctive natural formation often called the Jeep Arch due to its resemblance to a classic vehicle.

When planning your visit to the Jeep Arch Trail, be aware that the route is largely exposed, offering very little shade. This means you should prioritize hydration and sun protection, particularly if you are jogging during the warmer months. You will find parking generally available at the trailhead, making access straightforward. There are no fees or permits required to enjoy this trail, allowing for a spontaneous outing.

This trail stands out as a less crowded option for jogging near Moab, offering a refreshing alternative to more frequented paths. Its unique starting point under railroad tracks immediately sets a distinctive tone for your desert exploration. The Gold Bar Arch itself is a geological marvel, providing a memorable focal point for your effort. If you are seeking a challenging yet rewarding jogging experience away from the crowds, this route offers a fantastic opportunity to connect with the rugged beauty of the region.

You can see the tower and the adjecnt butte very prominently from the intersection of the Jeep Arch loop. There are actually three different rock climbing routes up this short tower; if you look carefully you might see metal bolts toward the top that climbers use to rappel back dow the face when they're done with their climb.

Gold Bar (Jeep) Arch

Highlight • Natural Monument

Gold Bar, or Jeep, Arch is a fantastic arch that sees far less traffic than the nearby Corona Arch. The trail takes you right up to and actually travels underneath this arch, which some say looks like an outline of a jeep. There are some shady spots under the arch that are great places to rest, eat a snack and snap some photos before returning to the trailhead.

How long does it typically take to jog this trail?

The estimated duration for jogging the entire route is approximately 50 minutes. However, this can vary based on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the scenery or navigate the more technical sections.

What is the terrain like on the route?

The terrain is diverse and challenging, featuring significant stretches of slickrock, red sandy washes, and areas with boulders and loose sections. You'll also encounter an unusual start through a large culvert under railroad tracks. Some parts require scrambling over rocks, and it's crucial to watch for delicate cryptobiotic soil.

Is the trail suitable for beginner joggers?

This trail is generally rated as moderate to challenging. While some initial parts might be runnable, it includes steep climbs, descents, and scrambling sections that would necessitate walking. It's best suited for joggers with some experience on varied and technical desert terrain.

What unique features or landmarks will I see along the way?

The primary highlight is the spectacular Gold Bar (Jeep) Arch, a natural sandstone formation. You'll also pass by Gold Bar Tower and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding red rock landscape, including glimpses of Arches National Park, the La Sal Mountains, and the Colorado River.

Is this trail dog-friendly?

Yes, the trail is dog-friendly, unlike many trails within Arches National Park. However, it's recommended to keep dogs on a leash to protect local wildlife, especially bighorn sheep habitats.

Do I need a permit or pay a fee to access the trail?
