The Visitor Center De Wieden serves as an ideal starting point for exploring the trails. You'll find parking facilities directly at the Visitor Center, making it convenient to begin your adventure.
Yes, the trails around the Visitor Center are generally easy and accessible, making them suitable for beginners and families. The terrain is predominantly flat. For an especially accessible option, consider the 1 km Floating Walkway, which is flat and suitable for all ages, including wheelchairs and prams.
The terrain is mostly flat, characteristic of the low peat swamp landscape. You'll encounter a mix of paved, unpaved, and natural surfaces. Be aware that some paths, like the Wetlands Adventure trail, can be wet and muddy, potentially requiring gumboots or wellies for a comfortable experience.
You'll experience a unique wetland ecosystem shaped by peat extraction. Highlights include expansive reed fields, flower-filled meadows, and swamp forests. You might also see historic peat workers' houses, traditional tjasker windmills, and enjoy a View of the Beulakerwijde. The Laarzenpad Nieuwleusen is a notable trail in the area.
The area is a haven for wildlife. Keep an eye out for rare animals such as otters and black terns. You might also spot various water birds like cormorants, egrets, bitterns, and kingfishers, especially from observation sites along the trails.
The park offers beauty year-round, but spring and summer are excellent for birdwatching and seeing the meadows in bloom. Autumn provides beautiful colors in the reed beds and forests. Be prepared for potentially wet conditions, especially in wetter seasons, and dress accordingly.
While dogs are generally welcome in National Park Weerribben-Wieden, specific rules may apply to certain trails or areas to protect wildlife. It's always best to check local signage at the Visitor Center for the most current regulations regarding dogs, especially leash requirements.
Generally, there is no entrance fee to access National Park Weerribben-Wieden or its hiking trails. You typically do not need a permit for day hikes. However, specific activities or guided tours might have associated costs, so it's advisable to check with the Visitor Center De Wieden for any special requirements.
Yes, the route around the Visitor Center de Wieden intersects with several other paths. You may find yourself on sections of the Jabikspaad gedeelte Overijssel, Overijssels Havezatenpad - 14, and the WNW WaterReijk - St Jansklooster - oranje route.
Yes, for a truly immersive experience, consider the Wetlands Adventure trail. This path runs through the marshes, often requiring gumboots, and involves crossing waterways via self-operated barges using ropes and pulleys, adding an adventurous and unique element to your hike.
Given the wetland environment, sturdy, waterproof footwear is highly recommended, especially if you plan to explore less-maintained paths. Gumboots or wellies are ideal for trails like the Wetlands Adventure trail. Dress in layers, bring water, and consider binoculars for wildlife spotting.
Pure adventure with various ferry crossings, where you have to dock yourself ✋, across wet reed terrain 😄!!
Day 01: Arrival in Diever in Drenthe. Before that, a first short stop at the De Wieden visitor center in the NSG Weerribben-Wieden. natuurmonumenten.nl We have planned a small loop of around 4 km, which should be enough at 25-28 degrees and without shade. The tour always goes along the water. In the middle is the mown natural path - sometimes it really gives way. Reeds left and right and then moor water. So don't leave the path. In 4 places the creeks/side arms have to be bridged using cable ferries. Work is required here. Rope is in the water and is slippery😀. At the lake you can see a tower rising out of the water in the distance, the rest of the village that stood there. Unfortunately we didn't see the popular otters, but we did see lots of frogs, butterflies and dragonflies. Not very photogenic, too fast. It's a shame: Today, Monday, the cafe was closed and the tour boats stayed put. You drive through the NSG. A nice short tour. Now we continue to Giethoorn. The Venice of the North.
