Beautiful walk with mostly off-leash area for dogs. Only the part over the heath are dogs welcome provided they are on a leash. This is because of the horses that run loose there. (We unfortunately did not see them)

Drents-Friese Wold. Walked with friend Pieter. Beautiful route via Aekingerzand and Groote Veen. Heathlands, drifting sand, forests, fens and views.

Showing Translation

Aekingerzand and Groote Veen. Beautiful surroundings. Fens, heathland, forest and sand drifts. Sand drifts were created in the past because the heathlands were overgrazed and too much sod was cut.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the terrain like on this hike?

The terrain is quite varied, shifting between vast open sand-drift areas known as the "Kale Duinen" (Bare Dunes) of Aekingerzand, extensive heathlands, and dense forests. You'll primarily be on unpaved paths, including sandy sections, which can make some parts more challenging. During wet periods, it's wise to wear boots or waterproof shoes.

What natural features or viewpoints can I expect to see?

This route offers a dramatic contrast of landscapes. You'll experience the unique inland sand dunes of the Aekingerzand, which feel almost desert-like. Key highlights include the Beautiful Pond, a View of the heather in Drents-Friese Wold, and a View of Het Groote Veen. There are also designated lookout towers in the Aekingerzand offering panoramic views.

What kind of wildlife might I encounter?

The diverse ecosystems here support various wildlife. Keep an eye out for colorful butterflies, reptiles, and numerous bird species, including the wheatear, which has its only inland breeding ground in the Netherlands here. You might also spot heath sheep and Exmoor ponies grazing, helping to maintain the open landscape.

Is this trail dog-friendly?

Dogs are generally welcome on a leash throughout much of the area. However, it's important to note that dogs are not allowed within the fenced area of the Aekingerzand between March 1st and September 1st due to ground-nesting birds. Please check local signage for specific restrictions.

When is the best time of year to hike here?

The area is beautiful year-round, but the heathlands are especially vibrant during their blooming season, typically in late summer (August-September). Spring offers fresh greenery and active wildlife, while autumn brings beautiful colors to the forests. Even in winter, the stark beauty of the sand dunes can be very appealing.

Is the trail suitable for strollers or wheelchairs?

Due to the predominantly unpaved paths, including sandy terrain and sand-drift areas, this trail is generally unsuitable for wheelchairs and strollers. The natural, rugged character of the landscape makes it challenging for wheeled access.

Where can I park to access the trail?

While specific parking locations aren't detailed, the Nationaal Park Drents-Friese Wold has various access points. It's advisable to check the park's official website or local maps for designated parking areas near the Aekingerzand or Groote Veen sections to find the most convenient starting point for your hike.

Are there any permits or entrance fees required for Nationaal Park Drents-Friese Wold?

Generally, there are no entrance fees or permits required to access the hiking trails within Nationaal Park Drents-Friese Wold, including the Aekingerzand and Groote Veen areas. However, always respect park regulations and follow any posted signs.

Does this route connect with other hiking trails?

Yes, this route intersects with several other paths. You'll find sections that overlap with the Drents-Friese Woudroute, MTB-route Appelscha, and the NAP-route - 03 - Peize - Diever, among others. This offers opportunities to extend or vary your hike if you wish.

What makes the Aekingerzand area unique?

The Aekingerzand is one of the few remaining large inland sand-drift areas in the Netherlands, often referred to as the "Kale Duinen" (Bare Dunes). Its unique, almost desert-like landscape is actively managed to preserve its character, including the use of grazing animals like heath sheep and Exmoor ponies to prevent reforestation. This makes it a truly special natural phenomenon within the country.

How long does this hike typically take?

This particular hike is approximately 9.8 kilometers (6.1 miles) long and typically takes around 2 hours and 28 minutes to complete, depending on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the scenery.
