The
Walk Jantjesplaat - National Park De Biesbosch
trail is beautiful year-round, but spring and autumn offer particularly rich experiences. Spring brings abundant birdlife and fresh greenery, while autumn showcases vibrant colors. Due to its freshwater tidal nature, the landscape is constantly changing, so waterproof footwear is recommended, especially after rain, regardless of the season. You can conveniently start the trail from the Jantjesplaat car park, which is located near two catering establishments. Alternatively, you can begin from the Biesbosch MuseumEiland, which extends the walk but provides additional amenities like a museum, restaurant, and charging points for electric bikes.
Dogs are generally welcome in Nationaal Park De Biesbosch, but they must be kept on a leash to protect the sensitive wildlife and natural environment. Always clean up after your dog.
There is no specific entrance fee or permit required to hike the
Walk Jantjesplaat - National Park De Biesbosch
trail or to enter Nationaal Park De Biesbosch itself. However, please respect all park regulations, especially regarding wildlife and nature conservation. The terrain is characteristic of a wetland environment, featuring willow forests and marshland. Paths are mostly accessible, but some sections can be muddy, especially after rain. Waterproof footwear is highly recommended. You'll be walking on and between water in this unique depoldered area.
The Biesbosch is a haven for wildlife. You can expect to see numerous water birds like spoonbills, geese, tufted ducks, shovelers, and bluethroats. Keep an eye out for evidence of beavers, such as gnawed trees, as the area is home to a significant beaver population. With luck, you might even spot ospreys or sea eagles.
The trail offers diverse scenery, including flooded trees and dense willow forests. Key highlights include the Footbridge at Jantjesplaat in De Biesbosch, the natural area of Jantjesplaat itself, and the Noordwaard in De Biesbosch, an area transformed from agricultural land back into a water-rich natural habitat.
This specific route is rated as 'moderate' and covers approximately 14.6 km, requiring good fitness for its duration of around 3 hours 41 minutes. While shorter, easier versions of walks in the Jantjesplaat area exist, this particular komoot tour is best suited for hikers with a reasonable level of endurance.
Yes, this route incorporates sections of several other trails. It fully covers the Biesboschpad - Dagwandeling Jantjesplaat and also intersects with parts of the Jantjespad, Jantjesplaat, and Deeneplaatweg trails.
The Jantjesplaat area is part of Europe's largest freshwater tidal zone, meaning water levels in the forests are influenced by ebb and flow, creating a constantly changing ecosystem. This unique environment supports exceptional biodiversity, particularly rich birdlife and a thriving beaver population.
Given the wetland terrain and potential for muddy paths, waterproof hiking boots are essential. Dress in layers suitable for the weather conditions, and bring sufficient water and snacks, as facilities are primarily at the starting points. Binoculars are recommended for birdwatching.
Nice walk through the beautiful Biesbosch. The walk is doable with the dog, they must be on a leash. The dog had to jump over the electric fence twice. The smaller dogs can just walk under here. On the path encountered two cattle grids, so let the dog jump again or lift it.
Nice walk on mainly natural paths. Not everything is easy to walk through due to balsam and nettles. Good condition is useful.
Essential for this trip: insect spray! Furthermore, a very nice trip, where you literally see the herons, woodpeckers and other birds flying away in front of you. With a bit of luck you might even spot fish or sea eagles here.
Went to the Biesbosch National Park for the first time. It's so incredibly beautiful there!
Report of the Walk in De Biesbosch National Park. Date: November 7, 2025 Time: 2 hours and 49 minutes Distance: 13.7 km Average speed: 4.9 km/h Elevation gain: 20 m Introduction: Last Friday, we enjoyed a beautiful walk in De Biesbosch National Park, starting and ending at the parking lot at the Spieringsluis marina. This walk not only offered us the opportunity to experience nature in all its glory, but also to enjoy the fresh air and the peaceful surroundings. Route description: The route begins at the parking lot at the Spieringsluis marina, where we could orient ourselves and put on our hiking boots. We followed a well-marked path that led us through the vast marshes and along the characteristic waterways. Highlights of the Walk: Natural Beauty: De Biesbosch is known for its unique flora and fauna. We spotted several bird species, including herons and ducks. The autumn colors of the trees provided a breathtaking view. Calm Waters: The reflection of the trees in the water was a beautiful sight. We paused to enjoy the view and take photos. Rare Animals: During the walk, we came across a curious cow with large horns. To be safe, I kept my dog on a short leash and decided to walk along the bank to give the cow some extra space. Jantjeskeet: At 12.34 km, we passed the Jantjeskeet, a unique accommodation available for rent for groups. This hut offers a perfect base for groups who want to enjoy the beautiful nature of De Biesbosch. Whether you want a day of relaxation or want to organize an activity, the Jantjeskeet has everything you need. It's an ideal place for a team outing, family day, or weekend with friends. More information about renting the Jantjeskeet can be found at biesboschactiviteiten.nl. Birds: We spotted several birds, such as geese and ducks, which filled the area with life. Information board: At the Jantjeskeet, there's also a board providing information about the park and its ecology. It was interesting to learn more about the nature around us and the role the Jantjeskeet plays in promoting nature experiences. Sunset: The sun began to set, creating a beautiful display of colors on the horizon. It was a perfect moment to pause and enjoy the beauty of nature. Footbridges: During the walk, we encountered several footbridges made of grates. These bridges sometimes made it difficult for dogs to cross, as the grates made them feel like they might fall. This required extra attention and caution while crossing. Activities: During the walk, we took several breaks to enjoy a snack and take in the surroundings. It was a great opportunity to relax and catch up with each other. Map of the Walk Below is a map of our route, which provides a clear overview of the path we followed. The map shows not only the route itself but also the various highlights we visited. Conclusion: The walk was a perfect combination of nature, exercise, and conviviality. With a distance of 13.7 km and an average speed of 4.9 km/h, it was a challenging but very rewarding experience. De Biesbosch National Park remains a must-see for anyone who loves walking and exploring nature. We look forward to discovering more of these beautiful places in the future.
This isn't a five-star hike, but it's a pleasant walk. The area is beautiful to walk through. Unfortunately, there are a few long, straight sections. These are completely paved and run through trees, so you can't see away from the path. Most of the route does go through open areas. Here, you have views of plenty of water, and therefore, you'll also find various birds. There are plenty of parking spaces in this area. From here, you can easily reach the hiking area.
Nice walk from the parking lot at the Spieringsluis. The route goes over parts of the Jantjespad and around the polder De Hooge Hof.
