Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I park and access the Paisley Woods Bicycle Trail?

You can access the trail from trailheads located at Alexander Springs and Clearwater Lake within the Ocala National Forest. Both trailheads offer amenities like drinking water and toilets, but require a day-use fee for entry.

What is the terrain like on the Paisley Woods Bicycle Trail?

The trail features a classic Florida scrub and sandhill environment with rolling sandhills topped by longleaf pines, creating a 'roller-coaster ride' feel in some sections. The surface is primarily packed sand and dirt, but can include mud after rain. Be aware that stretches of deep, soft sand can make riding challenging, so wider tires or airing down your tires might be beneficial.

Is this trail suitable for beginners?

Yes, the trail is generally suitable for all skill levels, especially its beginner cross-country loops. While it's mostly flat with minor elevation changes and lacks rocks or roots, some sections with deep sand can be challenging. It's considered 'green' (easy) difficulty overall.

What wildlife might I see along the route?

The trail offers opportunities to observe diverse wildlife typical of Florida's scrub and sandhill environments. You might spot deer and even black bears, particularly if you ride during the early morning or late evening hours.

What is the best time of year to ride the Paisley Woods Bicycle Trail?

While not explicitly stated, generally the cooler, drier months from late fall through early spring are ideal for riding in Florida to avoid extreme heat, humidity, and peak insect activity. This also reduces the likelihood of muddy sections after heavy summer rains.

Are there any fees or permits required to access the Paisley Woods Bicycle Trail?

Yes, accessing the trailheads at Alexander Springs and Clearwater Lake requires a day-use fee for entry into those recreation areas within the Ocala National Forest. For more detailed information on fees and regulations, you can visit the official USDA Forest Service website.

Does the trail intersect other well-known paths?

Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Florida National Scenic Trail - Central Region, the Florida Trail, and other local paths like 63, 42-16.6, and National Forest Service 545 A (42-16.6).

What makes the Paisley Woods Bicycle Trail unique?

This trail is notable as the Ocala National Forest's primary destination for mountain biking, offering a true back-woods adventure. Its 22-mile length provides a substantial ride deep into the wilderness, fostering a profound connection with nature due to limited signs of civilization and often no cell service along much of its route. It's also well-maintained by volunteer groups and the Forest Service.

Are motor-assisted bicycles allowed on this trail?

No, motor-assisted bicycles are not permitted on the Paisley Woods Bicycle Trail, as it is designated as a mountain bike trail.

How long does it typically take to complete the Paisley Woods Bicycle Trail?

The full 22-mile loop typically takes around 2 hours and 33 minutes to complete by bicycle, depending on your pace and how often you stop. The trail consists of two interconnected 11-mile loops, the Alexander Loop and the Clearwater Loop, which can be ridden individually or combined.

What should I bring for a ride on this trail?

Given its 'back-woods adventure' nature and lack of amenities along the route, it's crucial to be prepared. Bring plenty of water, snacks, a repair kit for your bike (including a pump and spare tube), navigation tools (as cell service can be spotty), and appropriate sun protection. Consider wider tires or the ability to air down your tires for better traction in sandy sections.

Trail Reviews

Darren Reever
March 31, 2025, Paisley Woods Bicycle Trail

A tough ride. The eastern side of the loop was very sandy and the sand often loosened up just when i was getting up to speed. It feels like almost every corner down to Clearwater Lake would wash out the front wheel if i tried to lean at all. I was happy to see pine needles or oak leaf clutter the trail because it often provided more grip. Shade from the canopy was sparse, full sun about 80% of the time. Parking within Alexander Springs or Clearwater Lake recreation areas cost $15 per person but there were parking areas you could use outside of the fee areas. The water at both spots was refreshing though and for me it was worth the money.
