Hiking
Embark on the Ehrwalder Alm - Seebensee Trail, a challenging hike that guides you through serene alpine meadows and dense, enchanting forests. As you ascend, the path frequently opens up to reveal expansive panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. This difficult 9.3-mile (15.0 km) journey involves a significant 2065 feet (629 metres) of elevation gain and typically takes about 5 hours and 3 minutes to complete. Your efforts are rewarded with the sight of Lake Seebensee, its clear, blue-green waters beautifully framed by towering peaks, often reflecting the majestic Zugspitze.
When planning your visit, be aware that the overall difficulty can change based on your chosen route. If you hike directly from the Ehrwalder Almbahn valley station, expect a demanding route that requires good physical fitness. Options like the "Hoher Gang" are particularly exposed and challenging, so you will need alpine experience and a good head for heights to tackle them safely.
This trail is notable for its dramatic alpine scenery, culminating at Lake Seebensee, which is often considered one of the most picturesque lakes in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena. The route offers a true mountain experience, combining varied terrain with rewarding vistas. It is a classic choice for those seeking a strenuous but highly scenic day hike in the region.

Yes, the trail to Seebensee lake is generally dog-friendly. However, please keep your dog on a leash, especially around grazing animals and other hikers, and remember to clean up after your pet.
The ideal time to hike to Seebensee lake is from late spring to early autumn (typically June to October). During these months, the weather is usually pleasant, and the trails are clear of snow. Winter hikes are possible but require appropriate gear and experience due to snow and ice.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike this trail to Seebensee lake. It is located within the beautiful Tiroler Zugspitz Arena, which welcomes hikers without charge for trail access.
Yes, if you prefer a less strenuous hike, you can take the Ehrwalder Almbahn cable car up to the Ehrwalder Alm mountain station. From there, the hike to Seebensee is considerably easier, often following wide gravel roads with gentler ascents, cutting out a significant portion of the uphill climb from the valley.
The terrain varies. If hiking directly from the valley station, expect a challenging ascent with sections that can be rocky or lead through forests. If you use the cable car, the path from Ehrwalder Alm to Seebensee is generally moderate, consisting of wide gravel roads and well-marked paths, though some parts might still be a bit rocky.
The route offers several highlights. You'll pass by the Ehrwalder Alm, enjoy panoramic views from the Seeben Valley Lookout, and can stop for refreshments at Seeben Alm. The ultimate reward is the stunning Lake Seebensee itself, with its crystal-clear waters and the impressive backdrop of the Zugspitze, offering a magnificent View of Seebensee and the Surrounding Mountains.
Yes, this route shares sections with several other official trails. You'll find parts of the Ehrwalder Alm-Seebensee (813) trail, the Via Alpina Red R46, and the Adlerweg Etappe 16. Other intersecting paths include AV Weg 801A (Ehrwald - Gaistal - Leutasch) and Nordalpenweg 01A.
Yes, you can find refreshments at the Ehrwalder Alm mountain hut, which is accessible via the cable car or by hiking. Further along the trail, the quaint Seeben Alm also offers a place to stop for a break and a meal before reaching Seebensee lake.
Absolutely! Many hikers choose to extend their trip from Seebensee to the higher-lying Drachensee (Dragon Lake) and the Coburger Hut. This extension offers even more dramatic mountain scenery and unique views of Seebensee from above, though the section between Seebensee and Drachensee is considered the most difficult part of the extended hike.
For this hike, it's essential to bring sturdy hiking boots, weather-appropriate clothing (layers are recommended), sufficient water, snacks, sun protection, and a first-aid kit. Trekking poles can be helpful, especially on steeper or rockier sections. Don't forget your camera for the stunning views!
The tour to Seebensee started like the whole day actually, all mixed up 😅. But let's forget the first events. I begin with the start of the hike at the Ehrwald valley station. From here we took the cable car up to the Ehrwalder Alm in a comfortable way. Arrived at the top...one of us noticed that he left his sticks down in front of the toilet 🚽. ok what to do ...it's best to let the supervisor know. Said and done! He contacted the colleague in the valley. After 15 minutes the sticks arrived at the top with the gondola. Everyone had benefited from it😇! Because to compensate because we had to wait, there was a round of free beer. I'll tell you what, I was so glad this happened😅. From the Ehrwalder Alm we went over to the Seebensee. Unfortunately we couldn't stay there long. Because there was a heavy rain shower. So hurry to the Seebensee Alm. The innkeeper had just finished work here. But when he saw that we
Very nice tour to the Coburg DAV hut. If you want to save yourself a bit of ascent, you can take the Almbahn to Ehrwalder Alm. The Seebensee offers a fantastic panorama and is also good for those who have experienced cold weather (I tested it at a water temperature of 9 degrees 😬) From the Coburger Hütte (you can also stay overnight with a reservation) you have a great view of the surrounding mountains and the Drachensee and Seebensee. The last 800 meters to the hut are relatively strenuous. Up to Seebensee you can also wonderfully ride your bike on forest roads ... unfortunately too many e-bikers on the way. Nobody wants to exert themselves anymore.
The day started with pouring rain but soon the sun ⛅ came out. So back into the mountains for a beautiful walk to the Sebensee. This walk is largely on a beautiful nature trail. Sometimes you have to climb over rocks but it is doable. A fantastically beautiful walk!
Seeben Lake and Coburger Hütte with Drachensee!! Absolutely worth seeing!
Today's hike took us from the Ehrwalder Alm to the SeebenSee and back. It was by far one of the most beautiful tours we have done in the 3 years we have been visiting the Zugspitz Arena. But also the toughest in terms of kilometers. To be honest, I don't think I've ever walked that far in my life😅 The SeebenSee is not a place of solitude but the panorama just made it worse. A tour that's tough but also one to fall in love with. Definitely do it!!!
Hike to the Sebensee and Coburger Hütte with the Drachensee right behind it. The lakes so blue even on a cloudy day. Amazing! The last hike up was strenuous for us, not having hiked so high above sea level for two years.
Today was a day to warm up, but still full of adventure and unforgettable moments - our first hike after a long time was simply incredible: the "hiking gang is together again!" From the valley station of the Ehrwalder Almbahn we made our way to the Ehrwalder Alm, before continuing along picturesque hiking trails to the Seebenalm and finally to the beautiful Seebensee. The clear, turquoise water of the lake was simply magical, even if it was a bit chilly for swimming. However, our peace was soon disturbed by a curious herd of cows that licked the salt from our skin with great joy. We extended our tour around the lake to take even more beautiful pictures before finally enjoying a well-deserved refreshment with a cyclist in the Seebenalm. The way back was a bit challenging, especially with the steady descent, but we enjoyed every minute and are already looking forward to the next adventures together. It was a day that we won't forget anytime soon - here's to many more unforgettable tours!
