Hiking

The Inland Lake & Boardwalk Trail loop, when accessible, offers a unique journey through the marshy wetlands of Maumee Bay State Park. This moderate 6.4-mile (10.3 km) route, with a negligible 26 feet (8 metres) of elevation gain, is primarily a boardwalk system that winds past the Wildlife Pond and offers stunning views of Lake Erie. It's a prime spot for birdwatching, with over 300 species recorded, and you might even catch a glimpse of muskrats or bald eagles.

Before you plan your trip, be aware that the Maumee Bay Boardwalk, which forms a major part of this trail, is currently closed for repairs and is anticipated to reopen in spring or summer of 2026. When it does reopen, the trail is generally dog-friendly on leash and can be completed in about 2 hours and 34 minutes. Parking is available at Maumee Bay State Park, and it's wise to check conditions, especially in winter when the boardwalk can become slippery with snow.

This trail is a true gem for its rich biodiversity, making it one of the best places in Ohio for wildlife viewing. The extensive boardwalks provide an intimate experience with the wetland ecosystems, allowing you to observe nature up close. Don't miss the Observation Tower or the Big Hill viewpoint for expansive vistas over the park and Lake Erie, showcasing the natural attractions of Lucas County.
