Hiking

The spectacular Su Gorropu gorge, one of the best-known wonders of Sardinia, rises with vertical walls that reach 400 metres. The difference in height between the riverbed and the top of Punta Cucuttos is almost 500 metres. To avoid walking the entire way back, you can book an off-road transfer.

The Tour starts from the large clearing of Genna Silana, where the steep walls of Punta Poloche immediately frame a breathtaking panorama. The path takes you through some cuiles, ancient sheepfolds built of stone and wood, where Sardinian shepherds have lived for generations taking care of their livestock.

Through enchanting landscapes, the route reaches the bed of the Rio Flumineddu, signaling the beginning of Su Gorropu. This gorge was sculpted by the erosion of the stream, fed by the waters of the Supramonte, which infiltrate underground tunnels and then re-emerge from the sources downstream.

Here, a ticket office offers you directions. Inside the canyon, small paint dots guide the way, but the complexity of the terrain, with cyclopean and smooth boulders, requires caution. It is good for every hiker to evaluate their abilities and decide when it is time to start the return.

Cuiles (Traditional Shepherd's Hut)

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Along this path you come across some cuiles, traditional sheepfolds with stone bases and wooden and branch structures. At this point, there is one of the best preserved. Shepherds have used these structures for generations, tending pigs, goats and oxen. Since the 1950s and 1960s, these sheepfolds have been progressively abandoned, without generational change, with rare exceptions.
