Vogelbergsteig Trail

Highlight • Trail

The Vogelbergsteig is a challenging hike from Dürnstein to the historic Dürnstein Castle ruins. During the ascent, you will enjoy an impressive panoramic view of Dürnstein and the surrounding landscape. Worthwhile viewpoints include the protruding rock pulpit of the Vogelberg and the Starhembergwarte on the summit of the Schlossberg. The ascent on the Vogelbergsteig is interesting due to many different path sections, but challenging due to the relatively steep incline. The route offers varied sections, but is partly steep and secured by chains over a gneiss slab in the last third. It is not recommended to traverse it in icy or snowy conditions.

Dürnstein Castle Ruins

Highlight • Castle

The castle ruins were built above the town of the same name in Dürnstein in the 12th century. The castle is known thanks to a famous prisoner: The English King Richard the Lionheart was held here from December 1192 to March 1193 after the return of his third crusade and then passed on to the German Emperor Heinrich VI. delivered. A themed trail runs around the castle ruins that tells you more about the history.

Dürnstein Old Town

Highlight • Historical Site

From Dürnstein-Oberloiben, the bus to Krems/Melk runs hourly. Dürnstein, a Wachau village with hourly bus connections to Krems/Melk, is historically closely linked to the Kuenringers. The place gained fame through the imprisonment of King Richard the Lionheart (1192/1193), whose ransom contributed to prosperity and development.

A very popular and beautiful little circular hike. The rocky path through the oak forest from the ruins to the Fesslhütte and the Vogelbergsteig trail are like something out of a fantasy film. Incredibly beautiful!

Almost exactly a year ago, my route took me past this area on the first two stages of the World Heritage Trail. (komoot.com/de-de/tour/1612121700) At that …

A very beautiful, but also very strenuous tour. Requires excellent footing and good physical fitness. Not recommended in wet conditions.

Monika and I ended up in the Wachau today. Since the weather forecast isn't consistent and our tour isn't that long, that was the best decision. The view was great, in the morning it was already very autumnal.
In the Fesslhütte we were able to warm up and eat well.
For the evening there was a delicious menu that showed …

The landscape is just WOW, but the Vogelbergsteig is "not" for inexperienced and small children
