Nice resting place. In the forest opposite you can see deer. You can hear marmots and if you are lucky you can even see them.

It is worth doing the tour as late in the day as possible, as the animals come further down in the early evening or late afternoon. At the top of the slopes you can see large herds of deer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the Val Trupchun Trail start, and what are the parking options?

The trail typically starts from the Prasüras car park or Varusch, both located near S-chanf. Prasüras is a common starting point for the main loop. Public transport options are also available to reach the trailhead.

What is the best time of year to hike the Val Trupchun Trail?

The trail offers beautiful scenery throughout the hiking season. Autumn is particularly spectacular due to the golden larches and is also the red deer rutting season, making it an excellent time for wildlife observation. Summer provides lush alpine meadows and good weather for hiking.

Are dogs allowed on the Val Trupchun Trail?

No, dogs are generally not permitted on trails within the Swiss National Park, including the Val Trupchun Trail. This regulation is in place to protect the abundant wildlife and natural environment of the park.

Do I need a permit or pay an entrance fee for the Swiss National Park?

There is no general entrance fee to access the Swiss National Park or hike the Val Trupchun Trail. However, as it is a protected nature reserve, strict regulations apply regarding staying on marked paths, not disturbing wildlife, and not collecting anything from nature. No specific hiking permits are required for day hikes on established trails.

What kind of wildlife can I expect to see along the trail?

The Val Trupchun Trail is renowned as one of the best wildlife-viewing areas in the Alps. You have excellent chances to spot red deer, ibex, chamois, and marmots. With luck, eagles and bearded vultures can also be seen circling overhead. Binoculars are highly recommended for optimal viewing, especially around Alp Trupchun.

What is the terrain like on the Val Trupchun Trail?

The trail primarily follows a narrow dirt footpath, winding through mixed alpine woodlands of larches, firs, and pines, as well as lush alpine meadows. There are some uneven sections and occasional stairs. While not overly exposed, parts of the path run alongside steeply sloping hills. You'll also traverse past the rushing Ova da Trupchun river.

Is the Val Trupchun Trail a loop or an out-and-back route?

The most popular and recommended option for the Val Trupchun Trail is a looped path, typically starting and ending at the same point, such as the Prasüras car park or Varusch. This allows you to experience the diverse scenery and wildlife viewing opportunities without retracing your steps.

What are the main points of interest along the route?

Beyond the abundant wildlife, key points of interest include the Ova da Trupchun river, a picturesque Wooden Bridge Over the Stream, and the scenic Alp Trupchun, which serves as a prime wildlife observation spot. You can also observe impressive geological fold structures near Alp Purcher.

Does the Val Trupchun Trail connect with other hiking paths?

Yes, the route shares sections with other official trails. Notably, a significant portion of it is part of the Senda Val Trupchun. It also intersects with parts of the Nationalpark Bike-Marathon - Etappe 3 (Livigno - S-chanf), Graubünden Route, and Inn-Radweg.

Is the Val Trupchun Trail suitable for families?

The main loop of the Val Trupchun Trail is generally considered moderate in difficulty, making it accessible for families with some hiking experience. The trail's length and elevation gain should be considered, but the rich wildlife viewing opportunities can be very engaging for children. There are designated rest areas, particularly around Alp Trupchun, suitable for breaks.

What is the best strategy for wildlife viewing on the trail?

To maximize your chances of seeing wildlife, especially red deer, ibex, and chamois, it's best to start early in the morning or hike later in the afternoon. The area around Alp Trupchun is known as a prime observation spot. Bring binoculars and move quietly to avoid disturbing the animals. September, during the red deer rutting season, is particularly active.

The umpteenth time in Val Trupchun and always beautiful. Perfect for animal watching! Marmots, foxes, deer, stags, chamois, ibexes, eagles, bearded vultures, birds and small animals in general. Of course you don't see everything at once, but you will always see some of them! Simply great!!😃👍👌

Since we haven't seen any large wild animals on this holiday, today we're going to Val Trupchun, in the Swiss National Park. There are two paths through the valley that can be combined to form a nice circular route. Halfway through the outward journey we hear the first roaring, and on the way to the rest area we hear it repeatedly to the right or left of the path. The valley is known for being home to deer. We can also see a few animals through the binoculars, but unfortunately not close enough for photos. During our lunch break we keep looking through the binoculars at the surrounding slopes and see two grazing ibexes and the horns of two other animals that are probably lying comfortably on a hilltop. Opposite you can see a herd of chamois grazing, at least nine animals can be seen. Occasionally you can also see other deer. Great, our wish to see animals has been fully fulfilled. After a long rest we use the valley path back to the car park. Just like the high trail, it is mostly laid out as a path, the last section from the Varusch park hut leads along a road. Conclusion: It's always nice to do this loop, I don't even know how many times we've been here.

Always a nice and easy autumn trekking, with the emotion of admiring deers and other animals. Find out more at waterwind.it

Since we never saw the animals, apart from the marmots, while hiking, we decided to visit the national park with a guided tour. This turned out to be the right decision and we can only recommend it. In addition to numerous chamois, we saw deer, ibex and marmots. In addition, we learned a lot of things worth knowing in explanations and stories about the animal world and the creation of the national park.

A day of hiking in the national park near S-chanf through Val Varusch and Val Trupchun and back again, in constant company with the rushing of the Ova da Varusch and Ova da Trupchun and the roaring of the deer ready to mate 🤣😍😎🫣🦌🥳 To be honest, I don't have the right words to say about this wonderful area that would even come close to doing it justice 😳🤷🏼‍♀️ Even the photos, yes they reflect the beauty, but they don't really create this breathtaking beauty Nature can even begin to be conveyed. 🌲🍁🍃☀️🦌🪨🍄🍂🌳🪵🌿 We also had a perfect day with the weather, almost kitschy with the steel blue and initially completely cloudless sky 💙 As always, I also put the paths on the camera, That's why so many pictures again 🫣🥳😳 OK, even without paths it would be a lot 🤣 couldn't decide which one to take 🙈🤷🏼‍♀️

As always, it was a wonderful hike. Relatively easy and in the week at the end of June we were almost alone.

Photo weekend in the Engadin. In Val Trupchun you have a very good chance of observing game.
