Grinton Moor

Highlight • Climb

Grinton Moor is a testing 1.9 mile (3 km) climb from Grinton village in the direction of Leyburn. After climbing sharply out of the village, you will gently wind through the stunning moorside. The climb is well-known in the cycling world as it featured in the first stage of the Tour de France in 2014. The average gradient is seven per cent and the road climbs up to 659 feet (200 metres).

Bolton Castle

Highlight • Castle

Fun fact: It's where James proposed to Hellen on All Creatures Great And Small. Even if you don't want to propose enjoy the castle, the gardens and the falconeer show.

Immediately steep after you leave the Leyburn Road, turn right after 600 m / 1,970 ft (which will probably take the better part of 5 mins!) towards the Fleak & Low Row/Reeth. From the village, the average 10% gradient lasts for 1.8 mi (3 km) in spite of a dip and several welcome flat sections.

From the top, the descent is entertaining/scary depending on your skill and confidence levels. If you're in no hurry, pause at the second left bend from the top (about 400 m / 1,300 ft) to appreciate the view. Swaledale lies before you. The winding road leads downhill to the right.

In summer, beware of grazing sheep close to the road on the (fast) flat. The road narrows and roughens as you approach the river at the excellent Scabba Wath.

A great road in either direction, if you have the legs to 'enjoy' it!

Tempting to smash through this great gravel section, especially with the prevailing wind at your back. Pause a while if you can to appreciate the vista (and the likely solitude).
