The Sonian Forest

Highlight • Forest

Groenendaal station is also our gateway to the Sonian Forest. You can't miss it, the world's largest beech trees are here. Their trunks have diameters of up to 160 centimeters and some peaks up to 50 meters high in the air. They are often even more than two centuries old. Parts of this 'primeval forest' have been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Together with the magical Hallerbos, which is covered every spring with a purple blanket of wild bluebells and the Meerdaalwoud-Dijle Valley, it is part of the Brabantse Wouden National Park. A valuable walking tip!

Jan van Ruusbroec Forest Museum

Highlight • Monument

There must be many stories hidden in such an ancient forest. The Forest Museum tells you everything about the history, residents and forest management of the Sonian Forest. The museum is housed in a historic tenant farm that, due to its location, is also an ideal base for long walks and cycling trips.

At this central location we commemorate the eleven Belgian forest rangers who died or went missing during the First World War. When designing the 'Forest Man' monument, artist Richard Viandier drew inspiration from the funeral rites of the Celts. It will probably not escape your notice that this place feels a bit 'Stonehenge'. The site consists of a circle of eleven stones or 'menhirs', each dedicated to one of the eleven forest rangers.

Church of Our Lady

Highlight • Religious Site

From a simple chapel next to a farm in the 12th century, to a church known for its beautiful statue of Saint Mary, to a popular pilgrimage destination. The Church of Our Lady of Alsemberg, built in a late Gothic style and recognizable by the typical Brabant architecture from the 14th century, even received the ducal title. Be sure to take a look at the church. The baroque-style confessionals, the authentic Romanesque baptismal font and the gilded devotional statue of Our Lady make you pause and think of earlier times. To this day, many pilgrims find their way to Alsemberg.

August 10, 2024,Treinstapper-Route von Groenendaal nach Halle – Wandern in Flandern 🥾
On my hiking tour through the Belgian region of Flanders, I have now traveled further into the area a little south of Brussels. The cool thing about the Treinstapper hikes is that they run along Flemish GR long-distance hiking trails and are easy to reach by public transport. And so today I am hiking from Groenendaal station to Halle outside …
