Ronse Railway Station (Oldest Station Building on the European Mainland)

Highlight • Historical Site

Welcome to Ronse! Your walk starts here at the station, the oldest station building on the European mainland. This building originally stood in Bruges, but was moved at the end of the 19th century and rebuilt stone by stone in Ronse. On the side of the tracks you can still view the original facade.

The Obelisk

Highlight • Monument

The obelisk that you see on the market square is 11 meters high and was once the first public fountain in Ronse. Originally, the letter 'W' of King of the Netherlands 'Willem I' stood at the top of a crown on the sphere of the obelisk. After the independence of Belgium in 1830, it was removed and replaced by the Habsburg eagle, the city's coat of arms. Did you know that the crown is kept in the Spaniards Castle, but the letter 'W' has mysteriously disappeared...?

Ronse: Crypt of St. Hermes

Highlight • Religious Site

Pause for a moment and breathe in the history of St. Hermes Basilica and Crypt. Admire the elegant choir stalls and the equestrian statue of Saint Hermes (patron of the mentally ill), or listen to the Carillon with its 49 bells. Together they weigh no less than 12 tons! This 'Basilica Minor' or 'smaller basilica', a title it acquired in 2019, is open every day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. You can only climb the tower by appointment. It is definitely worth braving the 208 steps, because you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the city and its hilly surroundings.

Muziekbos Play Forest

Highlight • Forest

The Music Forest, which overlooks the Flemish Ardennes on a million-year-old witness hill, is highly recommended for nature lovers. Although you can fully enjoy the melody of rustling leaves, the forest actually has nothing to do with music. It owes its name to the Celtic translation of 'swamp': 'Muz'. Tip: in the spring (April/May) you can enjoy a carpet of blooming bluebells. In the music forest you can walk along the designated paths, children can have fun in the two play zones.

Deurnis Art Installation

Highlight • Monument

Photo tip! On your walk to the neighboring municipality of Maarkedal, you will come across the 'Deurnis'. A cheerful and functional work of art by Jan Detavernier. This 'portal to nature' offers an incredibly beautiful view of the meadows from the sofa.

Tom Boonen's Legs Sculpture

Highlight • Monument

Every 'Flandrien' knows the Traaiberg and former cyclist Tom Boonen. During his professional career he managed to defy this 'calf breaker' several times. The 'Boonenberg' was his favorite climb. And that deserved a tribute. On top of the Traaienberg you will find a seating platform with a cast of Tom Boonen's legs on it. Maarkedal artist Thomas Huyghe designed the bronze statue. Tom Boonen himself was the model, the tattoos and scars on the bronze legs testify to this.

On the Hollebeekpad, a quiet and safe cycling and walking path, you will pass many sheltered spots where you can stop for a while. Be sure to do that, because you will also discover a place where you can read a poem written by Jeroen Theunissen. He was winner of the Herman De Coninck Audience Award in 2016. On the way along the Hollebeekpad... a beautiful mix of nature, art and poetry!

Beguinage Oudenaarde

Highlight • Historical Site

A hidden gem in the heart of Oudenaarde, this serene Beguinage. The red-painted gatehouse bears the image of the plague saint, Saint Roch. Behind the gate awaits a tranquil world of whitewashed houses (some dating back to the 17th century) and a neo-Gothic chapel. Time seems to stand still here: perfect for a short break during your walk. Let the peace and simplicity of this place sink in.

Trail Reviews

Tadaa
July 27, 2024, Oudenaarde - Ath - Dag 1

After a smooth train ride we arrived in Oudenaarde around 9:30 am. We walked through the center and did some shopping for the road. We crossed the Scheldt via a hydraulic bridge and soon ended up in greenery. And yes, when you leave from the water, you almost have no choice but to go up. Some parts were steep, but all in all the scrambling wasn't too bad. About the time of our lunch break, we saw a wooden spool-turned-table and two chairs: there is no such thing as a coincidence... After our picnic we walked further between fields and meadows, with the occasional patch of forest. We turned west to walk through the Muziekbos to Ronse. There we did our shopping for our evening meal and walked the last kilometers to our Campspace. We received a warm welcome from Heidi and Tim, and settled in the orchard. A delicious pasta with everything, prepared on our gas fire, ended the day. Our legs and feet urged us to go to sleep early, and so we did.

Beautiful train walker that guided me along all kinds of paths over mountains and through forests.

Just a little too much ash fall to walk on. Very beautiful surroundings.
