Follow the Drau cycle path – the source in Dobbiaco to the sunny town of Lienz

You can go back by bike following the outward route, or as many choose by train from Lienz to Dobbiaco / San Candido. Ticket price with bike 12 euros per person

Today it went steadily uphill from Lienz in the direction of the source of the Drau. The cycle path sometimes leads along the Drau, but mostly through the forest or at the edge of the forest. It is paved and very easy to drive. There are only a few real gradients, so the engine only had to be switched on every now and then. Beautiful tour through the Dolomites.

Postponed to day 4 Vitalpinum and Lienz city tour in a separate recording from the prospectus: Day 3: Cycle tour on the Drau Cycle Path to Lienz (approx. 45 km) We start with the bikes again in San Candido and cycle today on the Drau Cycle Path to Lienz in East Tyrol. Not far from the source of the Drau we get on our bikes and after a few kilometers we reach the Austrian border. Through small villages and always along the Drau we ride on the continuously paved bike path to the Vitalpinum, a mountain pine oil distillery with a feel-good garden, medicinal herb field and stone pine power station. After the interesting tour, we continue cycling to the city center of Lienz, where we end our bike tour. We have enough time to visit the city center of the provincial capital of East Tyrol, which is well worth seeing. A typical lunchtime snack awaits us today during the bike tour. Then return by bus. Dinner.

The Drau cycle path in Carinthia, always the right decision, whether upper or lower reaches. We took the train from Lienz to Toblach in South Tyrol. I bought tickets to San Candido and then, with a somewhat uneasy feeling, sat there for another 4 minutes without tickets to Dobbiaco. The ÖBB only sells tickets to San Candido. The Italian conductor smiled mildly during the check and said the ride was on the house this time. Ugh... And then had a delicious Italian latte in the touristy Toblach on the 3 Peaks. Beautiful weather for cycling, but there was such a strong headwind that you almost always had to pedal despite the predominantly downhill gradient. The cyclists going uphill were pushed up by the wind. Wow... The cycle path is almost entirely paved and well signposted, whether on the Italian or Austrian side. You just have to do it.

There are still 2.5km left on the track. in my opinion I wouldn't do it again unless I went beyond Lienz

Rent a bike in Toblach near the train station (or directly at the Innichen train station, then you can leave the bike there after the return journey by train). It's downhill the whole time through beautiful valleys and along the river. Unfortunately, you can only use certain trains back with your bike (always those that end in Innichen), as they have a bike compartment. Sometimes they only run every 2 hours
