Hiking

A lighthouse, seabirds, humpback whales and the deep blue sea: This hike in the easternmost tip of O’ahu offers you a varied coastal experience on the Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline. On the Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse Trail you are constantly on paved paths. You should definitely remember to bring enough sun protection.

You start at the parking lot on Makapuu Lighthouse Road and immediately hike towards the sea view. Soon the southeastern coast of O’ahu unfolds before your eyes. Fantastic panoramic views accompany you constantly - particularly impressive at the Makapuʻu Lookout and Makapu'u Head. The latter is the highest point of your hike. You look at the cliffs and islands that slope steeply down to the coast and rise up in front of you in the Pacific. These are protected areas for seabirds. You can also watch whales here on their migration route. The picturesque lighthouse with its red roof fits wonderfully into the backdrop.

This viewpoint offers spectacular views of the coast, the beach and the picturesque lighthouse towering just before the ocean. If you're lucky, you can even spot some whales in their migration season from May - November.

Makapu'u Head

Highlight • Viewpoint

This is the highest point along the Makapu'u Point Trail — a superb vantage point for taking in views of Koko Head, Koko Crater, and offshore islets that serve as wildlife sanctuaries for Hawaiian seabirds. You can also see the red roof of the historic Makapu'u Lighthouse below you. The lighthouse itself was built back in 1909, and is unfortunately off-limits for visitors.

As an added bonus, we climbed a mountain today with a magnificent view of the Koko Head crater and the beach where we later went swimming, right next to Barak Obama's estate (unfortunately he wasn't at home, I wanted to have coffee with him 😂🤣)
