In summer, definitely do it early - the climb takes a long time and it gets hot:-)
Drinks are no problem - on the plateau near Caussignac there is a very nice looking restaurant and a water point - unfortunately I couldn't try the restaurant, but there were a lot of cars in front of it at lunchtime...
