Lanzarote, the volcanic island par excellence. Home of the Volcanoes Natural Park, which more than a corner of the Canary Islands, seems like a piece of another planet that has been hidden in the center of the island.

It is right in this natural park where the impressive volcanic cones of Caldereta and Caldera Blanca are located. To get to them, the trail takes you through an incredible area of badlands that originated from several eruptions that occurred in the 18th century. These episodes left 30% of Lanzarote's surface buried, but they could not defeat these two colossi.

The Route travels through a chaotic space, a path surrounded by lava of various shapes that accumulates disorderly. It is a simple circular walk that gives you spectacular views from the highest part of the Caldera Blanca ridge.

If you don't have a car, you can get to the starting point by taking a bus to Mancha Blanca. Check the schedules and lines at this link: www.arrecifebus.com.

Islet and Caldera Blanca Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Volcano

It is easy to understand the traditional name of this path when you see yourself surrounded by a sea of black lava and your destination is two literal islets. An almost lunar experience in which life is present in the form of centuries-old lichens that sprout on the stones despite the harsh conditions. The path is simple, but it is necessary to wear appropriate footwear and be protected from the sun and carry water, and it is advisable to go early in any case.

La Caldereta Crater

Highlight • Volcano

This is the first volcanic cone you encounter on the route. Its highest part is 325 meters above sea level and its caldera measures 300 meters in diameter. Its shape is somewhat oval and has an opening, which facilitates access to the bottom of the crater. For this reason, agriculture and livestock farming was practiced inside until the mid-20th century, since the craters accumulate more water and result in more fertile land than the outside.

Caldera Blanca

Highlight • Volcano

A special place, with impressive views and a curious history of geological formation in which two volcanic episodes are mixed. You can skirt the entire caldera, although the last section is a little more exposed and you can avoid it by going down to the path again. By the way, the caldera is more than a kilometer in diameter!

Pyroclastic formations

Highlight • Volcano

This environment combines pyroclastic formations product of two different volcanic episodes. The cones of Caldereta and Caldera Blanca were formed two million years ago and remained as two islets after the eruption of Timanfaya between 1730-1736. It is interesting to observe the differences and imagine the literal islets in a sea of black lava.

January 11, 2022, Lanzarote 1 Tanz auf dem Vulkan. Um die Caldera Blanca

Wow. A great opening tour for Lanzarote. The view into the Caldera Blanca crater and the view of the gigantic lava flow from the 1730-1736 eruptions is breathtaking. Many hikers take the route from the parking lot to the highest point of the crater. Most turn around at the top, overlooking the appeal of the circumnavigation. We were able to go on a second hike. The weather is unstable, a stiff breeze is blowing. The round is great and quite strenuous. Also through the underground. We had to be careful not to be blown away. The large crater Caldera Blanca has a diameter of 1200 m and is 20 million years old. The lava masses around it are almost 300 years old. Very interesting and beautiful views.

The trail offers truly breathtaking views. The first 2 kilometers are relatively flat, surrounded by volcanic rocks in a barren landscape that feels almost alien. Then begins the ascent to the volcano's crater: not particularly challenging, but it’s important not to have vertigo and to watch your step. The wind was also very strong, so it’s crucial to consider this at the top where it could throw you off balance during the climb, and to bring suitable clothing to combat it, even though the sun and temperatures can be significant. These technical precautions are well worth it for the incredible view at the crater's edge: a stunning mix of sharp black rocks, blue sea on the horizon, and an imposing crater beside you. It feels like being explorers on another, almost lifeless planet. The view of the crater is truly beautiful.

Sturdy hiking shoes recommended, partly loose scree.

DO NOT DO THIS ROUTE AND DO NOT NAVIGATE THE CRATER CLOCKWISE. This route takes tou unncessarily across rocky technical lave fields and clockwise encounters you with a dangerous Loose gravel steep descent. How so many people have liked this actual route around the crater is staggering! Go anti-clockwise, avoid crossing the black rocky lava fields.

Just MAGNIFICENT, the ancient Volcano 🌋 Blanca with an impressive diameter. I think this is the hike not to be missed on Lanzarote with a magnificent view of the National Park - ℹ️ for parking, don't hesitate to go to the end of the path and for better visibility of the National Park, do it preferably in the morning.

You simply have to do this tour. An experience to look at the lava sea from above 👆. Experience it live, you can't describe it

Calm and sunny... perfect for a walk around the crater with a wide view over Lanzarote. I see a small group of sheep climbing around the crater rim. Attention! Highly recommend this 🌋 tour
