Gravel riding

As you start this gravel tour in the heart of Zurich, you probably can't even imagine how far the views you'll soon be enjoying will be. But soon after leaving the hustle and bustle of the city around the main train station, you turn onto the first forest passages and immerse yourself in nature kilometer after kilometer. On Switzerland Mobile Route 32 you follow the course of the Sihl river and change to Route 84 at Sihlhölzli. You now drive on well-developed forest roads towards Schlieren, Urdorf and finally to Birmensdorf. At Landikon you leave the cycle path again and climb the three hairpin bends to Ättenberg. Gravel paths then alternate with neighborhood streets. This section between Ättenberg and Aumüli is a little off the beaten path. The constant ups and downs on the chain of hills will definitely inspire you.

The last climb of this tour – up to Felsenegg – is once again tough. But it's definitely worth it! Once at the top, you can enjoy a fabulous view of Lake Zurich and the Höckler run. Mountain bikers have known this descent for a long time. At this point, the gravel bike doesn't go down the trail, but down the gravel road - on the direct route back to Zurich.

Gravel section between Ättenberg and Aumüli

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

This section is a little off the beaten track. The alternation between lonely forest passages and neighborhood streets gives the whole tour that certain something. A passage that even local gravel enthusiasts have not ridden dozens of times. On the left the view down into the Reppischtal and on the right towards the wide Mittelland.

When you drive up the gravel road, slightly out of breath, and the panorama at Felsenegg opens up - simply majestic! You can take a break in the restaurant.

Trail Reviews

April 5, 2025, Reppisch Felsenegg gravel circuit

Too busy on weekends near Utlieberg, i would recommend to use a mountain bike for this ride. The last part is very steep (downhill). Not enjoyable on gravel bike !

Riding a Dutch bike on mountain bike trails. The Swiss looked at me incredulously 😂. Who invented it...the Belgians 😁

Via Höcklerstrasse up to the Uetliberg. Short and steep but easy to ride as long as you have a low gear ratio. Otherwise, it's better to ride up at the back. Wonderful views at the top and then on to great gravel paths. So close to the city and yet so quickly in another world. On the way back, you cross the road a few times, but you're mostly away from traffic. You can certainly ride in the opposite direction (the climb is then more on asphalt) but the version you did is definitely nicer 🚴
