Hiking

This unusual and easy walk has some super views, a fascinating history and a shingle beach. It is great for families with young children. It starts from Fawley town centre and follows a pretty country lane with views over Southampton Water to the small and historic inlet of Ashlett Creek. It then passes the Jolly Sailor pub and a 19th century tidal mill before following the coast through a contrasting landscape of industry and wildlife.

Ashlett Mill and Victoria Quay

Highlight • Monument

Ashlett Mill is an historic Grade II listed building that was built in 1816. It replaced an earlier mill that may date from medieval times and was used to mill corn until about 1910.

Victoria Quay was built in 1887 to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee and was used by flat-bottomed sailing barges to load and unload grain, salt and other supplies. In the 1920s this quay was used by much larger ships to unload materials used for construction of the first refinery in Fawley.

It's worth stopping at the swing bridge as you're passing the Fawley Power Station. It's a disused oil-powered station, with an interesting "flying saucer" shape of its control building.

From the swing bridge, over the Calshot Marsh Nature Reserve and Southampton Water, you can see Calshot Spit and Calshot Castle in the distance.

Calshot Spit

Highlight • Castle

Calshot Spit is in the perfect position for defending Southampton Water. Calshot Castle (surrounded by aircraft hangars) is a Tudor Fort that was built by Henry VIII in the 16th century using stone reused from Beaulieu Abbey. It was later fortified by the Victorians. During the World War I, Calshot provided Channel defence and a training base for pilots.

In 1929 and 1931 Calshot was the venue of the famous Schneider Cup Trophy race and was the base of the Supermarine S6 seaplane. Calshot played an important role in the World War II and became home to the Sunderland Flying Boat. Find out more about the history of Calshot inside the Sunderland hangar.
