Cycling

On the 55 kilometer long round trip “Immersion in the history of the river” through Eichstätt, Nassenfels, Wellheim and Dollnstein you will discover rock formations, castles, river valleys and karst springs. The beautiful baroque town of Eichstätt, or more precisely the train station there, is your starting point. Before you start cycling, it's a good idea to visit the Altmühltal Nature Park information center to get a first insight into the nature and culture of the region.

At the beginning you go along the Altmühl before a short climb takes you up to Adelschlag. In Nassenfels the tour takes you directly past the impressive moated castle. For the next few kilometers you are in the picturesque Schuttertal and at the same time on the trail of the river's history: When the Urschutter once diverted water from the Urdonau, it changed its course and the Urdonautal between Wellheim and Dollnstein dried up. Today the impressive rocks formed by the ancient river still remain.

After a short detour into the Altmühltal, we head uphill to the quarry area around Schernfeld. If you want to go fossil hunting yourself, it's worth stopping at the visitor quarry on Blumenberg. There are numerous finds on display in the nearby Bergér Museum. After a longer descent, the tour ends in Eichstätt. If you still have energy left, take a detour up to Willibaldsburg with the Eichstätt Jura Museum, where, among other things, an original “Archaeopteryx” awaits visitors.

Nassenfels Castle

Highlight • Castle

Already in its oldest historical appreciation the castle ruin of Nassenfels is called as one of the most impressive and most fortified Talburgen of Bavaria. This impression goes back to the preserved four towers, so the towering donjon and the three wall towers with the names witch or dovecote tower, White Tower and Red Tower.

Schutter Spring

Highlight • River

the Schutterquelle is in the Urdonautal between Konstein and Wellheim below the Galgenberg.... the actual main sources are in Wellheim.
The Schutter is 32 km long and flows into the Danube in Ingolstadt with a drop of 27 m. Since 1970 the Schutter has been channeled through the fortress moat

Altmühl Center at Dollnstein Castle

Highlight • Historical Site

The Altmühlzentrum is located in parts of Dollnstein Castle and on the adjacent outdoor area. Here you will find a tourist information office, an exhibition on the history of the river and landscape and lots of interesting information on the subject of people and the river.

Burgstein (Dollnstein)

Highlight • Natural Monument

Here is a nice rest area with information boards and a little shade. The rock formations are great to look at and give the area a characteristic look and an almost bizarre ambience. The practically vertically sloping Burgstein is a popular training area for climbers, which is also often used and probably has a lot of difficulties to offer. Watching the boys and girls climbing up is sometimes breathtaking and you're literally worried that nothing will happen and you keep your fingers crossed for success.

Very varied round. Highly frequented Altmühltal cycle path, the natural Urdonautal and the idyllic Schuttertal are very beautiful.

Since we wanted to do a tour in the Altmühltal again, I found what I was looking for a nice tour with the Altmühltal expert Armin. We have not yet been on the right side of the Autobahn. It was worth it, it was easy to drive and there weren't that many 🚴‍♀️ on the way.
