The Promenade des Echelles is a loop trail that starts and ends in Rochehaut. You'll find parking available within the village, which serves as the primary access point for this hike.
No, this trail is not recommended for dogs. The presence of fixed metal ladders and very steep, technical sections makes it unsuitable and potentially dangerous for pets.
The best time to hike is during dry conditions, typically from late spring through early autumn. It's crucial to avoid wet weather, as the steep, rocky paths and ladders can become extremely slippery and hazardous.
No, there are generally no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Promenade des Echelles or other trails within the Semois Valley National Park. However, always respect local regulations and private property.
This trail is classified as difficult and is designed for experienced hikers in good physical condition. It is not recommended for beginners, individuals with mobility difficulties, or very young children (under 10 or 11) due to its steep ascents, descents, and the need to climb fixed metal ladders.
The terrain is rugged and varied, featuring steep, rocky paths, unpaved sections, and significant elevation changes. The defining characteristic is the presence of several fixed metal ladders that you must climb to navigate near-vertical rock faces. You'll also find sections along the Semois River.
The trail offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Semois Valley and the meandering Semois River. Key highlights include the adventurous Ladders Trail itself, stunning View of the Semois River and Valley, another beautiful View of the Semois Valley, and a scenic Trail along the Semois.
While relatively short at just over 5 kilometers, this is a very demanding hike. It typically takes between 2 to 3 hours to complete due to the significant elevation changes and technical sections, including the ladders.
You should be sure-footed and wear sturdy hiking shoes with good grip. It's advisable to bring gloves for climbing the ladders. Avoid hiking in wet conditions, as the trail becomes extremely slippery. Always carry water and be prepared for a challenging, exposed route.
The trail is generally well-marked with red rectangles, often numbered 43. Pay close attention to these markers, especially in technical sections, to stay on the correct path.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Promenade des échelles (Rochehaut), the GR 16 Variante des Échelles de Rochehaut, and the GR 16 Sentier de la Semois, among others.
The "Ladders Walk" is 7 km long and has a height difference of 400 metres. This walk has a certain level of difficulty, which makes it so special, original and beautiful. The most amazing views of this region can only be discovered via this walk. Motorised vehicles are not allowed in this valley. The walking route is "not recommended for sensitive people and in bad weather". The special and surprising roads and paths provide a very varied route with steep slopes, fantastic views of the meanders and banks of the Semois and numerous rocks to climb. Ladders have even been placed at some rocks to make the climb possible. Nothing insurmountable, but. it is better not to be afraid of heights and to be very vigilant in rainy weather. During the last war, the inhabitants of Rochehaut hid under the "Roche de l'Ermitage" when the occupiers set fire to the neighbouring village.
For people with little training, not recommended as well as for young children
Beautiful, challenging walk with quite a bit of height difference over a short distance. Bring good shoes and some water for the journey.
Classic in the region, and with this glorious weather of course busy - busy - busy... Short distance, but very challenging!
Easy to do, even for older hikers, at least... in good weather.
Tough, beautiful walk but absolutely worth it. You simply must do this.
Great hike, should be on your bucket list! "The ladder hike" Is known among hikers as one of the most spectacular ones in the Ardennes. You start on the plateau of Rochehaut, climb down to the river Semois and then back up using four ladders. Exhausting, but the views are magnificent. Walk 43 is classed as a ‘dangerous and difficult’ hike, and on both ends you see the signs that say ‘Not recommended for sensitive people’. (This trail has been shut down for over many years because of the danger... Safety is improved but still 2 people died in 2015 during this hike) it involves a lot of climbing and crawling over rocks and fallen trees. We sweated a lot, but the sense of achievement you feel when you’ve reached the top makes this walk more than worth it.
This hike only has a name for a walk... it's a real super sporty hike with big drops, not recommended for impressionable people... but really great, ladders, roots and rocks to go up and down 😎
