Capel Bangor Railway Station (Vale of Rheidol Railway)

Highlight • Rest Area

Step aboard restored steam trains for a stunning journey along the Rheidol Valley. The narrow track gauge allows the railway to follow the contours of the terrain with many sharp curves and steep gradients which add to the railway’s charm. When space allows they will carry your bike on the train. During busy times, this may not be possible. There is an additional fee to transport your bicycle on the train.

Aberystwyth Castle Ruins

Highlight • Castle

Aberystwyth’s castle may lie in ruins but they’re incredibly impressive ruins. Built in the 13th century, this castle only survived for around 400 years before it was partially demolished by Oliver Cromwell. At one point in its life, it was a royal mint and produced shillings.

The castle was originally a formidable fortress with walls within walls. Of King Edward I’s phenomenal Welsh castles (including Conwy and Caernarfon), this one is the most ruined but it remains evocative. The castle is free to enter and is well worth having a wander about.

The southern end of the beach, by the 'harbour trap' is a good spot to watch surfers when there is a good groundswell, also keep a look out for dolphins and porpoises.
