Fossil Discovery Trail – Dinosaur National Monument

Hiking

The Fossil Discovery Trail takes you deep into the geological history of Dinosaur National Monument. Along the 3.5-kilometre (2 mi) trail, which you can also easily halve with the free shuttle, you'll discover ancient dinosaur bones, fossilised shells and the heart of the monument: the Quarry Exhibit.

Start at the visitor centre car park on the Utah side of the national monument. The rangers here will provide you with information and leaflets about the trails and the surrounding area. The shuttle that takes you to and from the Quarry Exhibit also starts here. You can therefore decide whether you want to walk the Fossil Discovery Trail there and back or take the shuttle.

Along the way, you'll find several small detours that will take you to various rock formations from different geological eras. Take a close look at the Morrison Formation, where you can spot numerous small and large dinosaur bones in the rock face. In the Stump Formation, which is even older, you'll find relics of shells and snails, as there was once an inland sea here.

Last but not least, you shouldn't miss the Quarry Exhibit. In the exhibition, you'll not only find exciting information about the giants that once lived here – you can even touch some fossils on an originally preserved excavation wall. The 1,500 or so dinosaur bones include various species from the late Jurassic period such as Allosaurus, Stegosaurus and Diplodocus.

Quarry Visitor Center

Highlight • Rest Area

The Quarry Visitor Center is located at the Utah side of Dinosaur National Monument. It offers some great information, exhibits and a little souvenir shop. You can get maps and books, talk to the rangers about trails and conditions and also take the shuttle that leaves for the Quarry Exhibit on a regular basis. Both are open year-round. This is also the trailhead for the Fossil Discovery Trail that ends at the Quarry Exhibit.

Morrison Formation

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Morrison Formation is part of the Fossil Discovery Trail and probably the most special one: walk up the rocky stairs and examine the cliff wall next to you. Look closely to find some petrified dinosaur bones, big and small. About ten feet above you, you can see eight vertebrae. The cliff is estimated to be about 151 million years old! More than ten species of dinosaurs have been found in the Morrison Formation.

Stump Formation

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Stump Formation along the Fossil Discovery Trail is known for its petrified clams. This formation is about 161 to 156 million years old! At this time, the area was part of a large inland sea. Look closer at the large rocks to find fossils like belemnites, snails, ammonites, and even bones of ichthyosaurs.

The Fossil Discovery Trail starts at the Quarry Exhibit and ends down at the Quarry Visitor Center. Over 1.2 miles (one way) it takes you to different formations that are exposed in rock layers where you can find dinosaur bones and other fossils from the Jurassic to Cretaceous era. To get to this trailhead, you can take the shuttle from the Visitor Center instead of hiking both directions.

Quarry Exhibit Hall

Highlight • Monument

The Quarry Exhibit is without a question THE place to visit when you are in Dinosaur National Monument. Not only will you find a lot of interesting information, you will also discover a huge rock wall containing approximately 1,500 dinosaur bones! There are different species from the Late Jurassic period like Allosaurus, Stegosaurus and Diplodocus. You are even allowed to touch some of the real 150 million year old dinosaur bones.

To get to the Quarry Exhibit, you can either take the shuttle from the Visitor Center that leaves on a regular basis or hike the Fossil Discovery Trail. I recommend taking the shuttle up and hiking down the trail.
