Trail Reviews

A🚶🏽‍♂️L🚴🏼‍♂️E🏃🏽‍♂️X
September 6, 2025, 🇨🇭 Promenade de Montreux & Château de Chillon

A run along the world-famous Montreux promenade is a must when visiting this sophisticated town. Since our day is packed with appointments – the highlight starts at 7 p.m. in the casino – we can't leave too late. But not too early either – last night was already long. We're skipping the planned detour to the Calderon Gorge. But I have a feeling we'll be back (perhaps in 2026?), so maybe the gorge won't disappear. Before 8 a.m., there's still quite a bit of activity on the promenade. Despite that, or perhaps because of it, there's plenty to see. The lake views are, of course, stunning. But so is the art! The exhibits from the 2025 Biennale stretch for over nine kilometers like a string of pearls. They can be admired until the end of October. Surprisingly, there are also a few everyday people there: a couple of rock-girls in sports mode – fitting for our day! In addition to the thousands of music fans who descend upon the city on this day, a WTA tennis tournament is also taking place. But that seems to be a bit of a shadow compared to the main event. Our destination and turnaround point is the Château de Chillon, one of the most photographed historical buildings in the area and certainly the most visited castle complex in Switzerland. Almost 900 years ago, this mighty and supposedly impregnable structure was built out of the lake. Lord Byron immortalized the fortress with his poem The Prisoner of Chillon. Speaking of monuments, the Freddie Mercury statue is being fought over almost as fiercely these days as a medieval castle. There must have been millions of photos taken here. But all of them were peaceful and very positive. But this is a topic in itself, which will be explored in a future documentary. Stay tuned!
