Yes, this "Petit tour" is generally considered a moderate hike, suitable for families and occasional hikers. While some sections may be stony or involve wooden stairs, the paths are well-marked and accessible. Starting with a chairlift ride from Schwarzsee to Bärghuus Riggisalp can further reduce the overall ascent, making it even more family-friendly.
The trail is a loop starting from Schwarzsee. You can find parking available in the Schwarzsee village area. Many hikers opt to take the chairlift from Schwarzsee up to Bärghuus Riggisalp to begin their hike, which reduces the initial climb.
Schwarzsee is accessible by public transport. You can typically take a bus from Fribourg or other nearby towns to Schwarzsee village. From there, the trailhead is within walking distance, or you can take the chairlift up to Bärghuus Riggisalp to start the hike.
The best time to hike the La vallée de Brecca - Petit tour is generally from late spring to early autumn (May to October). During these months, the weather is most favorable, and you can enjoy the alpine flowers and lush pastures. Winter hiking is possible but requires appropriate gear and awareness of snow conditions.
The terrain on this route is varied, featuring stony paths, wooden stairs, and forest trails. You'll often walk through scenic alpine pastures. The valley itself is an "ancient landscape" shaped by glaciers, so expect some unique geological formations and impressive limestone walls.
You'll encounter several beautiful spots. Keep an eye out for the St. Antoni Brecca alpine hut and the Hubel Rippa Alpine Hut. The trail offers breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Schwarzsee, especially from viewpoints like Stierenberg. You'll also see traditional sycamore trees and diverse alpine flora.
Yes, the Brecca Valley is known for its welcoming traditional alpine chalets, often called "buvettes d'alpage." You'll find spots like the St. Antoni Brecca alpine hut, Rainlihuus, and Hubel Rippa Alpine Hut where you can refresh yourself with local specialties like cheese, fondue, or meringue with double cream.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, as you'll be passing through alpine pastures with grazing cows, it's essential to keep your dog on a leash to ensure the safety of both your pet and the livestock. Always carry water for your dog, especially on warmer days.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike this trail within Naturpark Gantrisch. However, it's always good practice to respect local regulations, stay on marked paths, and leave no trace to help preserve the natural beauty of the park.
Yes, this route shares sections with several other trails. You will find yourself on parts of the Alpine Panorama Trail and the Freiburger Voralpenweg for significant portions of the hike. It also briefly touches upon the Wanderweg Schwarzsee - Kaiseregg and the Hexenweg.
The Brecca Valley is often referred to as an "ancient landscape" (Urlandschaft Brecca) due to its unique geological formations shaped by glaciers tens of thousands of years ago. This contributes to its wonderfully peaceful and wild ambiance, featuring impressive limestone walls, diverse alpine flowers, and traditional scenes of cows grazing beneath imposing sycamore trees.
A classic of mine 😉 I don't have to take anything to drink with me on this tour, you walk past fountains at longer intervals (5 in total). If necessary, there would also have been a number of Alpbuvetten. I have always liked the water so far, without any side effects 😊
I saw the tour some time ago at Komoot user Alessandro https://www.komoot.de/tour/101118150. Today we finally tackled it and we were not disappointed. It is an easy but beautiful circular hike. The start runs along the shore of the Schwarzsee and then along the Euschelsbach. The path continues through green hilly landscapes with alpine meadows and secluded forest - ideal for warmer days. There are always stairs 😅. The tour should be easily manageable for people who are not free from giddiness. From the Riggisalp we are with the chairlift down to the starting point (12CHF the ride, as of Sept. 2021).
