The Grand Col Ferret marks the border between Italy and Switzerland. This is the highest point of the TMB! The view is splendid.

Petit Col Ferret

Highlight • Mountain Pass

At the border of Switzerland and Italy, going through that pass will take you to a less crowded route compared to the Grand Col Ferret which is on the route Tour du Mont-Blanc.

Gîte de la Léchère

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Beautifully situated, this gîte invites you to stop off. It is not right on the TMB, so it does not seem so crowded. If you want to rest briefly (or long), you can plan this little "detour" very well.

Even in July, the path is still partly buried under large snow fields; very dangerous crossings ... only for experienced hikers

An easy but very beautiful mountain hike. It was quite busy at the top of Grand Col Ferret, but the view of the Grandes Jorasses was impressive. The return via Petit Col Ferret was much quieter. Highly recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difficulty level of this hike?

This hike is considered difficult, requiring very good fitness, sure-footedness, sturdy hiking shoes, and alpine experience. Be prepared for significant elevation changes and varied terrain.

What is the terrain like on this loop?

The terrain is varied and entirely unpaved. You'll encounter stretches through light woodland, pastures (where cows may be present), and steeper sections with scree and narrow paths. There might be old snowfields, especially near Petit Col Ferret. The path to Grand Col Ferret (2,537 m) involves a steep climb, while the descent often follows the well-trodden Tour du Mont Blanc path, which can be gentler.

Where can I park to start this hike?

The trail starts from Ferret. While the specific parking situation isn't detailed, it's common for popular trailheads in the region to have designated parking areas. Arriving early is often advisable during peak season.

What are the best times of year to hike this route?

The best time to hike this loop is typically from late June to early October, when the snow has melted and weather conditions are generally more stable. Always check local weather forecasts before you go, as alpine conditions can change rapidly.

Are dogs allowed on this trail?

Yes, dogs are generally allowed on this trail. However, given the presence of pastures with cows and potential wildlife, it's recommended to keep your dog on a leash, especially in these areas, and to ensure they are well-behaved and accustomed to long, challenging hikes.

Do I need any permits or pay entrance fees for this hike?

No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike this loop. However, if you plan to stay overnight in mountain huts or use public transport, those services will have their own costs.

What natural features and viewpoints can I expect to see?

You'll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the Val Ferret, the majestic Grandes Jorasses, and the broader Mont Blanc Massif. Highlights include the Pré de Bar glacier, views of Grand Combin and Mont Vélan, and tranquil areas like the Combe des Fonds where you might hear marmots and goats. The Grand Col Ferret (2,537 m) offers a significant viewpoint as it marks the border between Italy and Switzerland.

Are there any mountain huts or places to get refreshments along the way?

Yes, there are opportunities for refreshments. You can find mountain huts like La Peule mountain hut and Gîte de la Léchère. On the Italian side, Rifugio Elena is also a popular stop, known for good food and views.

Does this trail connect with other well-known hiking routes?

Yes, this route utilizes significant sections of the famous Tour du Mont Blanc, particularly for the descent, providing an easier return. It also intersects with parts of the Tour du Saint-Bernard and the 34-Alpine Passes Trail.

Is this a suitable hike for families with children or beginners?

Given its 'difficult' grading, significant elevation changes, and varied alpine terrain, this specific loop is not recommended for beginners or families with young children. It requires a high level of fitness and alpine experience.

What should I bring for this hike?

For this challenging alpine hike, you should bring sturdy hiking shoes, appropriate layers of clothing for changing weather, rain gear, plenty of water and snacks, a map or GPS device, sun protection, and a first-aid kit. Trekking poles can also be very helpful on steep or uneven sections.
